Tell us about your organisation

She’s En Scene is a women’s community cinema screening films either written or directed by women/female-identifying people to encourage discussion and creation within communities while also tackling social isolation. Our mission is to create spaces where women can watch, discuss, debate and create films in empowering environments. Our She’s En Scene online vintage clothing shop helps fund our activities!

Tell us about your Scalarama event this year

We’ll be screening Girlhood (2014), a coming of age drama telling the story of Marieme, a 16-year-old African-French teenager living in a poor Paris suburb who joins a gang of girls. The film discusses and challenges conceptions of race, gender and class. I first seen Girlhood at the GFT and was absolutely blown away by it. It’s visually stunning and a breath of fresh of air when it comes to female perspective in cinema. I knew about 30 minutes into the film I wanted to screen it one day, but more importantly, I wanted to talk about it with other women.

Tell us what Scalarama means to you

Scalarama is such a crucial part of the cinema exhibition calendar in Scotland and around the UK. The amount of knowledge and support I’ve received since being a part of this wonderful celebration of cinema has been incredible. You’re able to collaborate and share experiences with other exhibitors, not just during the event itself but throughout the year and develop. It’s amazing to see the passion exhibitors have (like myself) for film and showing films within their communities.

Why should people come to your event?

Our film screenings are safe spaces for women to discuss cinema so we really want to encourage women from all walks of life to come along, enjoy some popcorn, drinks and empower one another!

What Scalarama event(s) besides your own are you looking forward to?

ISO Design’s Mustang/Dogtooth film screening! Also Pity Party Film Club’s Hedwig & The Angry Inch film screening.

She’s En Scene screen Girlhood Friday 07/09 at ISO Design.
