Fosse In Film: Liza with a Z (1972)

1972|Rated U| 51m|Dir & Choreographed by Bob Fosse; Written by Fred Ebb; Music by Kander & Ebb and Various|Starring: Liza Minnelli|Genre: Concert Film

Liza with a “Z”: A Concert for Television is a 1972 concert film made for television and starring Liza Minnelli immediately after the success of Cabaret of the same year using the same director/choreographer and music writers (Fosse, Ebb and Kander).

Filmed at the Lyceum Theatre in New York after only eight weeks of rehearsals, the concert was shot with eight 16mm film cameras at the insistence of Fosse, in contrast to other television specials of the time which were all shot on videotape.

Singer sponsored the production, even though the producers did their best to keep any of the sponsors from seeing the rehearsals for fear of them pulling out due to Minnelli’s short skirts.

The concert showcases the amazing singing talent of Liza and her ability to be powerfully charming and vulnerable, yet totally in control on stage.

This event is part of a Liza Minnelli double bill evening. Tickets will be available online, or you can buy tickets on the door. Special 25% discount if tickets to both screenings of the double bill are bought.

This film screening is in partnership with LIFF Presents (Leeds International Film Festival).
