Celine and Julie Go Boating (Céline et Julie vont en bateau)

Sun 24 September @ 5:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Cube Cinema, Dove Street South
Bristol, BS2 8JD United Kingdom
+ Google Map
£4 - £5

Jacques Rivette, 1974, 193 min, 35mm, In French with English subtitles, Cert: 12A Rivette’s rarely seen yet biggest commercial hit, is an exhilarating combination of the themes of theatricality, paranoia and la vie Parisienne, all wrapped up in an extended and entrancing examination of the nature of filmmaking, and film-watching. Celine, a magician, and Julie, a librarian, meet in Montmartre and wind up sharing the same flat, bed, fiancé, clothes, identity and imagination. Soon, thanks to a magic sweet, they find themselves spectators, then participants, in a Henry James-inspired ‘film-within-the film’, a melodrama unfolding in a mysterious suburban house with the ‘Phantom Ladies Over Paris’, a sinister man and his child. The atmosphere, however, is more Lewis Carroll, with Juliet Berto and Dominique Labourier as twin Alices. The four main actresses improvised their own dialogue in collaboration with Rivette and scriptwriter Eduardo de Gregorio. Acknowledged by director Susan Seidelman as a huge influence on her own hit film Desperately Seeking Susan (1985), Celine and Julie Go Boating was Rivette’s greatest commercial and critical success – its freewheeling, playful spirit still capturing the imagination of new audiences today.

DIRT IN THE GATE MOVIES are proud to present an all day 35mm extravaganza of classic genre movies- Welcome to GRINDFEST! An exclusive ALL DAY GRINDFEST PASS will give you access to all of the following- BLOODBATH AT THE HOUSE OF DEATH (1984) 12.05pm - This British horror spoof was conceived as a star vehicle for then-popular TV comedian Kenny Everett, who plays an occult scientist whose team of paranormal researchers are measuring psychic disturbances at a rural English estate called "Headstone Manor." Once the site of a bloody massacre, the house is haunted by the very real presence of a moronic devil-worshipping coven and their exasperated leader, "The Sinister Man" (Vincent Price, who seems to enjoy serving up the ham). The inept Satanists are determined to prevent the so-called psychic experts from completing their task. Thanks to Reel Solutions for sourcing the archived 35mm print. FRIGHT NIGHT (1985) 2.15pm - For young Charley Brewster, nothing could be better than an old horror movie late at night.…
