It was the legendary cinema that banned Shane McGowan for his exploits during an All-Nighter, fought the ‘Video Nasties’ bill and was prosecuted for showing A Clockwork Orange… 25 years later the Scala Cinema is back for one night only to launch a new book featuring the complete collection of its iconic monthly programmes from 1978-1993.
Author and former Scala programmer Jane Giles reveals the highs, lows, thrills and spills of this notorious and influential rep cinema, whose audience then included many of today’s most exciting filmmakers. Published by FAB Press, the Scala Cinema book has been subsidised thanks to the generosity of some film industry folk, and crowd funded by Indiegogo.
Presented by Scalarama, the book launch event will be a night of film highlights, music & dancing, special guests, free Space Invaders tournaments and surprises! The headline act is now confirmed as composer Simon Boswell and his band AND performing live his scores for Scala classics by Dario Argento, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Richard Stanley.
Reuniting Scala staff and audiences alike, the venue will once again celebrate the Psychotronic, Kung Fu, horror, cult, music and LGBT+ films of the Scala’s vibrant daily changing programme. Everyone welcome. The Scala Cinema book will be on sale at the event or can be pre-ordered at www.fabpress.com
Tickets are £10 in advance from Scala: https://scala.co.uk/events/scala-cinema-book-launch-party
