George Romero’s debut feature was not the first zombie film, but it may be the best. This story of strangers battling an invasion of the undead defined and drove the genre. Its intensity still thrills, while the unknown cast, led by Duane Jones and Judith O’Dea, carry Romero’s satirical take on the idea that home is where the heart is – something the army of remakes and homages have never matched.
