Fabrica and Filmspot present a dance double bill as part of Scalarama 2024 this September. Two cult films to make you want to cut some rug, as day turns to night!

First screening at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm): Girl Walk// All Day, 2011

Girl Walk//All Day is directed by Jacob Krupnik, is a high-energy unconventional dance film, set to Girl Talk’s 2010 mash up album, ‘All Day’. The movie follows three dancers as they transform New York City into their stage, breaking free from everyday routines to explore themes of freedom and self-expression. Bursting with creativity, it captures the spirit of youth, adventure, and the power of music to bring people together. This film is a visual feast, inspiring viewers to see the world around them as a canvas for their own moves and to embrace life with unbridled enthusiasm and spontaneity. Filmed guerrilla style on the streets of New York, and originally released in short ‘chapters’ on YouTube, this is a rare opportunity to see the completed film on the big screen.

Second screening at 9pm (doors open at 8:30pm) – Hairspray, 1988

Hairspray, directed by Scalarama darling, John Waters, is a fun, vibrant film set in 1962 Baltimore. It follows Tracy Turnblad, a plucky teenager with big hair and even bigger dreams, who lands a spot on a local TV dance show. Tracy becomes an overnight sensation, challenging the status quo with her unique style and progressive views on racial integration. The movie is a lively mix of dance, music, and comedy, highlighting important themes like self-acceptance and social justice. With its catchy tunes and colourful characters, ‘Hairspray’ offers an entertaining yet meaningful look at a pivotal time in American history.

The screening includes projections by Level 3 Animation & Illustration students at East Sussex College in Lewes.
