Beatside presents: Dreamers & Rebels
This is an event for the mad ones – those who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to dance, and mad to dream and to rebel.
To kickstart our series, we are delighted to present a slice of Latvian culture and history with an eerily timely screening of 2022 political drama Janvāris (January), accompanied by a performance of Latvian folk dance and music.
Set against the backdrop of a fight for independence in 1991, Janvāris follows a Latvian filmmaker traversing the trenches of love and war in a dreamy and grungy coming-of-age drama.

The film is in Latvian with English subtitles. The event is open to everyone, but children will have to be supervised by an adult, as the film is rated 12A. The venue is wheelchair accessible – although, unfortunately, the toilets aren’t large enough to allow wheelchair use. Tickets are available on a pay-what-you-can basis, with a minimum fee of £2 and suggested donations of £5 – £10 to contribute towards future events.
This screening is part of the Scalarama Leeds 2023 Film Festival, a DIY cinema festival celebrating film exhibition in non-cinema venues. See the full programme of films here: instagram.com/scalaramaleeds/.
