SUMMARY:Reel Stories
DESCRIPTION:#reelstories \nReel Stories is a special exhibition of more than 40 original film posters and memorabilia celebrating Liverpool’s starring role in films from the past 60 years. \nLiverpool is a filmmaker’s dream. It’s a city of storytellers and performers\, writers and entertainers\, musicians and poets. \nFrom those first flickering pioneering days of cinema\, filmmakers have been drawn to this restless and defiant city\, enchanted by the millions of stories it holds\, both real and imaginary. Stories of high times and hard luck\, of love and hope\, of dreams and heartbreak\, of wrongdoing and retribution. \nReel Stories shines the spotlight on the city’s enduring relationship with the silver screen. We celebrate and explore the films that are undeniably Liverpudlian\, those that feature Liverpool as a world film location and the city’s escapist love affair with cinema itself.

SUMMARY:Scalarama Edinburgh '17 meeting #3
DESCRIPTION:Dudes and dudettes\, we are having the #3rd one coming! Feels like those wheels are now in motion and nothing can stop this cart of randomest movies rolling down on Edinburgh full force this September! So let’s gather and celebrate and talk further action. I did my best and emphasized 68 times how important it is that we get the separate wee room in the Royal **** Pub\, because last time some of the conversation was lost in the noise\, unfortunately. Let’s hope we will be heard this time round. \nIn the meantime\, though\, it would be great if we kept filling out the *Film* doc that is still kicking about somewhere in our group as well as your emails (and I’ll drop it here\, too\, just in case -> https://docs.google.com/document/d/1OxnACRt9jX2frVYwGv5g_BRuozHHIGEmqbl_kFZ8jiM/edit). Thought of something? Brilliant\, update it compulsively! Even if it’s still work in progress\, and you are not 100% sure\, it’s still better to have something and watch it slowly mutate rather than those cold\, empty spaces that say nothing at all. I think it is very important that we have this information collected in the fullest by the end of the month\, so that it can be passed on to those who will be working on the showreel and social media and poster design all through July\, not to mention to the national Scalarama Newspaper. \nOk?:) Great. See y’all very soon!.. \n************************************************************************\nNow\, once again for those who have newly joined our noble cause (or just about to) and still wondering what this fantastic beast is and where to find it.. \nScalarama is a month-long celebration of cinema that takes place in cinema and non-cinema venues each September across the UK. Would you like to nurture a more vibrant\, more diverse film culture in Edinburgh? Whether you already organise film screenings (or would like to!)\, programme a cinema/festival/venue\, or have absolutely no idea where to start – join the ranks of indie film exhibitors under the banner of Scalarama\, and we will make it happen together! \nEach of us will have a chance to put on our very own event(s)\, bringing it to fruition with a little help from the industry and each other. During the last meeting we picked the most convenient dates/venues for our screenings in September\, discussed some of the marketing strategies and assigned ourselves some extra roles in relation to that. So far this month we have been working on securing our venues for September\, working out the preliminary programme/schedule for our screenings\, setting up Scalarama Edinburgh email\, Dropbox and social media accounts\, researching licencing deals. In July we should be able to confirm all the titles\, having acquired the necessary film licencing\, and begin saddling the feisty marketing horse.. \nTake a look at the Scalarama website to figure more particulars about this beautiful cinematic conglomerate -> https://scalarama.com/ \nCheck out last year’s Scalarama Glasgow zine for inspiration -> http://bit.ly/2nScxsp. \nScalarama’s key aims: \n• Celebrating watching films together\n• Reducing barriers to entry\n• Linking practicing exhibitors\n• Empowering people to put on film screenings\n• Reaching out to a wider audience\n• Encouraging adventure in cinema \nTo take part in Scalarama\, what you need to do is: \n1# Join the Scalarama Edinburgh facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/406926709681456/)\, which will keep you up-to-date with everything that we do in the months of preparation\, \nand\, of course\, \n2# Show your face at our monthly meetings to discuss progress to date AND the plan of action for the up-coming month. THIS is going to be our 3rd one\, so still not too late to come round and join in!

SUMMARY:Jobriath A.D + live music // Scalarama Leeds 2017 programme launch
DESCRIPTION:Jobriath A.D. // Scalarama Leeds programme launch\n \nThe film Jobriath A.D (2012) is Kieran Turner’s fascinating documentary about 70s glam rock musician Jobriath. \nJobraith is considered to be “the first openly gay rock star” and was dubbed “the American Bowie”. He was also\, tragically\, one of the first rock stars to die of AIDS. \nHe is an intriguing 20th century figure; his short career was preceded by incredible hype\, with much of the publicity focused on his homosexuality rather than his musical talent. Dropped by his record company\, he died in the Chelsea hotel in his 30s. \nThe film is narrated by Henry Rollins. \nKieran Turner | 2012 | USA | 107 minutes | certificate 15 \nPlus live music from Leeds band Das Pain.\n  \nThis will be the first chance to see the new 2017 Scalarama season trailer\, pick up flyers and local guides. \nPay as you feel. SUMMARY:Lost Highway (35mm)
DESCRIPTION:Kicking off Scalarama Brighton and Beyond in true Scalarama style is a late-night screening of David Lynch’s surreal psychological thriller Lost Highway. This noir-influenced spine-chiller follows a jazz saxophonist (Bill Pullman) who\, after a bizarre encounter at a party\, is framed for the murder of his wife (Patricia Arquette). In prison\, the man inexplicably transforms into a young mechanic (Balthazar Getty) and begins a new life for himself.\n\n\nFeaturing the acting debut of Marilyn Manson and piercing support performances from Robert Blake\, Gary Busey and Richard Pryor\, Lost Highway has become a cult favourite of Lynch fans. In the year that Twin Peaks has finally returned to our screens\, join us as we revisit one of Lynch’s most eerie and affecting works\, twenty years down the road…

SUMMARY:Kaliman in the Sinister World of Humanon
DESCRIPTION:Kaliman in the Sinister World of Humanon \n(Kaliman en el Siniestro Mundo de Humanon \nMexico 1976\nDirector: Alberto Mariscal\nCast: Jeff Cooper\, Milton Rodriguez\, Lenka Erdo\, Manuel Bravo \nSpanish with English sub-titles. \nFor our first Scalarama screening this month\, we present a trash classic to melt your brain! \nThe Incredible Kaliman lands in Rio de Janeiro with his trusty sidekick Solin for the Congress of Psychology conference where a top scientist vanishes in suspicious circumstances. Hot on the trail\, El Hombre Incredible heads to the dark heart of the Amazon\, where evil scientist Humanon is using brain transplant technology to create a race of cyclops werewolf hybrids powered by superior human brains. Now he wants Kaliman’s brain! \nUsing his powers of telepathy\, Kaliman and sidekick Solin do what they must to destroy the demented Humanon who looks like a blood red KKK grand wizard in dark glasses and laughs hysterically after bellowing details of his evil plans. \nProtected by his micro-chip controlled lion roaring “zombie-tronics”\, a weasel like sadistic slave driver and a vanishing dwarf (we are NOT making this up!)\, Humanon is going to be a tough nut to crack. \nWill Kaliman save the day? \nThis cinematic outing for the popular Mexican comic book superhero features retro sci-fi laboratories\, telepathic severed heads\, crazy sound effects\, lurid costumes\, bad dialogue\, kung-fu chopping fights\, veiled femininity and bare chested machismo. We love it! \nThe main feature will be supported by a programme of insane Mexican film trailers and a crazy Super 8mm horror short.

SUMMARY:Death Watch
DESCRIPTION:Death Watch (1980) follows the story of Katherine Mortenhue (Romy Schneider) who gets famous for having an incurable disease in a future where death from illness has become extremely unusual. Journalist Roddy (Harvey Keitel) has a camera implanted in his eye which transmits what he sees so it can be relayed back to the television company NTV who wants to document Katherine’s deterioration in a Reality TV show cialis prodej. Katherine\, after being offered a large sum of money if she allows her last days to be filmed\, goes on the run with the assistance of Roddy. Much of the filming took place in and around Glasgow\, including Glasgow Necropolis\, Glasgow Cathedral\, the former Queen’s Dock on the River Clyde\, and the Glasgow City Chambers. A dark\, sobering piece from Bertrand Tavernier\, Death Watch explores the sinister lengths a morally bankrupt TV production company will go to. Akin to Sidney Lumet’s Network\, Death Watch is a film that\, as the years pass\, only grows more and more unsettling with its stark\, harsh message on a society in disrepair. Where death and decay is readily celebrated with ratings from a soulless production company\, Death Watch questions the very essence of what human compassion is.

SUMMARY:The Love Witch
DESCRIPTION:Following on from her feature debut Diva\, Anna Biller directed\, wrote\, produced\, scored and created all of the sets and costumes for her next film\, The Love Witch. As that title suggests\, Elaine (Samantha Robinson) is a witch who uses magic potions and spells to make men fall madly in love with her\, and usually with death on the cards. Inspired in part by the films of Douglas Sirk\, and with a score reminiscent of Morricone’s compositions for Argento’s earlier work\, The Love Witch is both a homage to 1960s technicolor melodramas and 1970s schlock horror with a feminist spin.

DESCRIPTION:OXIDE GHOSTS: THE BRASS EYE TAPES (Michael Cumming\, 2017) \nMade from hundreds of hours of unseen material from his personal archive\, director Michael Cumming’s film shares insights into the process of making the legendary TV series Brass Eye. Michael directed both the pilots and the series and\, over a two-year period\, witnessed the highs and lows of Brass Eye from a very personal perspective. \nPart documentary\, part artwork – the film is designed solely for live screenings and is made up almost entirely of never before seen footage. Oxide Ghosts carries the blessing of Chris Morris and provides a rare glimpse of his extraordinary working practices. \nMichael will be doing a Q&A after the film – spilling beans\, shattering myths and letting a few cats out of the bag. Celebrating twenty years since Brass Eye’s transmission in 1997\, this film and Q&A session are a must for fans of the series but will appeal to anyone with a curiosity about how great comedy is made. \n“[Oxide Ghosts] offers a well-judged and very rare insight into [Brass Eye’s] making\, encapsulating the fun and covert excitement that went on while the project was still under wraps\, before all the legal wrangling kicked in. SUMMARY:Cowards Bend The Knee with Live Score by Ela Orleans
DESCRIPTION:Matchbox Cineclub present Guy Maddin’s Cowards Bend The Knee\, with brand-new live score written and performed by Ela Orleans\, plus Q&A with journalist Brian Beadie. \nGuy Maddin is one of the most distinctive and idiosyncratic directors currently working. The Canadian auteur has mined and subverted the imagery and style of late silent and early sound cinema in such films as The Forbidden Room and The Saddest Music In The World to disorientating\, often hilarious effect. Cowards Bend The Knee is one his greatest\, but least-known films. Originally conceived of and presented as a peephole show\, the film’s ten chapters concoct an alternative cinematic biography for Maddin\, torn between the influence of his hockey star father and his attraction to Meta\, the beautiful girl from the local beauty salon / illegal abortion clinic. \nThis is Guy Maddin in purest form\, the most concentrated and probably craziest film of his career. Never have hockey\, hairdressing\, homophobia and hand amputations collided to such dizzying effect\, in perhaps the most authentically surrealist film of the 21st century. For Scalarama\, Matchbox Cineclub have commissioned Ela Orleans to write a new score. \n“Ela is FANTASTIC!” – Guy Maddin \nEla Orleans has gained an international cult reputation for her haunted\, noir-inflected torch songs. She recently came to more mainstream attention when her magnum opus Circles of Upper and Lower Hell was nominated for the SAY Awards. However\, the Polish-born musician has a parallel career\, scoring film soundtracks having studied composition under David Shire (The Conversation\, The Taking of Pelham 123) in New York. She has composed new soundtracks for films as diverse as Frank Borzage’s Lucky Star\, Carl Dreyer’s Vampyr and Jack Smith’s Flaming Creatures. \nAfter the screening\, journalist Brian Beadie will discuss Ela’s work and approaches to film scoring. \nThis screening is by arrangement with Guy Maddin and Winnipeg Film Group and is part of Scalarama Glasgow 2017.
