SUMMARY:The Connection (Shirley Clarke\, USA\, 1964)
DESCRIPTION:“The quartet of musicians\, led by the pianist and composer Freddie Redd and the caustic-toned post-bop saxophonist Jackie McLean\, perform brilliantly on-camera as they dramatize both the agonized wait and the needed high…”— Richard Brody\, New Yorker\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a cramped and dirty New York apartment\, eight junkies variously goof off\, chat and play jazz music while waiting for their heroin connection to show up. They’ve also struck a deal with documentary filmmaker Jim Dunn (William Redfield): they’ll let him film them provided he pays for their drugs. What could possibly go wrong…? The Connection was legendary cult film-maker Shirley Clarke’s debut feature – and a very early example of the ‘found-footage’ genre of film. (And the jazz is great too!)

SUMMARY:Sound it Out (Jeanie Finlay\, UK\, 2011)
DESCRIPTION:“It’s a delightful\, real-life version of Nick Hornby’s novel High Fidelity\, a song of love\, sadness and mortality with everyone involved doing it their way as they face the vinyl curtain.” \n— Philip French\, Observer \nA documentary about ‘the last surviving record shop in Teeside’\, when Sound It Out was released in 2011 an independent record shop was closing in the UK every three days. Since then the vinyl revival has changed their fortunes\, though sadly the shop at the centre of this film has now closed following the sudden death earlier this year of the shop’s owner\, Tom Buchart (a man whose passion\, humour and generosity elevated his shop into not only a haven for music fans of all stripes but also a community centre-cum-pilgrimage site). Jeanie Finlay’s film is a distinctive\, funny and intimate film about men\, the North and the irreplaceable role music plays in our lives – showing us what a wonderful man Tom was and how much his local community loved him. This screening is also in tribute to him.

SUMMARY:DANCE DOUBLE BILL: Girl Walk// All Day (2011) + Hairspray (2018)
DESCRIPTION:Fabrica and Filmspot present a dance double bill as part of Scalarama 2024 this September. Two cult films to make you want to cut some rug\, as day turns to night! \nFirst screening at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm): Girl Walk// All Day\, 2011 \nGirl Walk//All Day is directed by Jacob Krupnik\, is a high-energy unconventional dance film\, set to Girl Talk’s 2010 mash up album\, ‘All Day’. The movie follows three dancers as they transform New York City into their stage\, breaking free from everyday routines to explore themes of freedom and self-expression. Bursting with creativity\, it captures the spirit of youth\, adventure\, and the power of music to bring people together. This film is a visual feast\, inspiring viewers to see the world around them as a canvas for their own moves and to embrace life with unbridled enthusiasm and spontaneity. Filmed guerrilla style on the streets of New York\, and originally released in short ‘chapters’ on YouTube\, this is a rare opportunity to see the completed film on the big screen. \n  \nSecond screening at 9pm (doors open at 8:30pm) – Hairspray\, 1988 \nHairspray\, directed by Scalarama darling\, John Waters\, is a fun\, vibrant film set in 1962 Baltimore. Tracy becomes an overnight sensation\, challenging the status quo with her unique style and progressive views on racial integration. The movie is a lively mix of dance\, music\, and comedy\, highlighting important themes like self-acceptance and social justice. With its catchy tunes and colourful characters\, ‘Hairspray’ offers an entertaining yet meaningful look at a pivotal time in American history. \nThe screening includes projections by Level 3 Animation & Illustration students at East Sussex College in Lewes.

SUMMARY:All Of Us Strangers
DESCRIPTION:All of us hurt. All of us hope. All of us love. \nOne night in his near-empty tower block in contemporary London\, Adam has a chance encounter with a mysterious neighbour Harry\, which punctures the rhythm of his everyday life. As a relationship develops between them\, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up\, and the childhood home where his parents appear to be living\, just as they were on the day they died\, 30 years before. \n“After an impressive body of work\, Andrew Haigh levels up even further\, with a flawless film that reaches for the stars\, and gets there. It aches and shimmers” – Alex Godfrey\, EMPIRE \nDoors: 7.15pm \nFilm: 8.00pm

SUMMARY:12 Angry Men
DESCRIPTION:A suggestion from one of our TOM’s Film Club audience members. Life is in their hands – Death is on their minds! \nThe defense and the prosecution have rested and the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a young Spanish-American is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. What begins as an open and shut case soon becomes a mini-drama of each of the jurors’ prejudices and preconceptions about the trial\, the accused\, and each other. \n“Thoroughly engaging\, there is nothing dated or corny in Reginald Rose’s intensely knowing screenplay and Lumet’s energetic direction” – Ian Nathan\, EMPIRE \nDoors: 7.15pm \nFilm: 8.00pm

SUMMARY:HEARTS OF DARKNESS: A FILMMAKER'S APOCALYPSE
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 7.30pm    Film: 8.00pm \nWith the impending release of The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola’s self financed 120 million dollar potential masterpiece / disaster-piece Megalopolis\, and it’s accompanying discussion / bizarre controversy surrounding it’s production\, we take a look back at the king of all madcap Coppola productions with this remarkable film documenting the sheer insanity surrounding the production of Coppola’s undoubted 1979 masterpiece\, Apocalypse Now. \nCombining archival footage shot by Francis Coppola’s wife Eleanor and interviews shot later with those involved in the making of the film such as Robert Duvall\, Dennis Hopper\, George Lucas\, John Milius\, & Martin Sheen\, ‘Hearts of Darkness’ delves into the psyche of an artist on the edge as Coppola wrestles with his famed uncompromising artistic vision in the face of a $31 million dollar (easily $200+ million in today’s money) production of staggering technical and physical complexity. \nFilmed in the forests of Philippines\, the production deals with everything from severe shooting conditions and cast and crew problems\, to life threatening illnesses and natural disasters\, all in pursuit of Coppola’s mad undefinable vision of a Vietnam war epic that has become both the textbook example of late 70s filmmaking excess\, as well as one of the towering achievements of America’s golden age of modern cinema. \nTruly one of the great films about filmmaking\, the descent into near madness for Coppola is fascinating to watch as he chases his vision and nearly loses all sense of reality in an up river journey into the jungle almost as bizarre and wild as the ones experienced by the characters in the actual film. \n \nAlso available is a discounted joint ticket for this screening and our November 29th screening of ‘American Movie’\, a profoundly funny and beloved cult documentary about a young filmmaker with no less ambition but far less money (approximately $3000) attempting to shoot a horror film in mid 90s Wisconsin\, only to a face a series of hopelessly hilarious setbacks.

SUMMARY:DRIVE AWAY DYKES
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 7.30pm    Start: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nYes\, that’s right\, we are using the original title. Drive Away Dykes or as it was stupidly re-christened by the movie studio\, Drive Away Dolls is the product of legendary director Ethan Coen (who with brother Joel\, created the likes of Raising Arizona\, Fargo\, The Big Lebowski\, O’ Brother Where Art Thou?\, No Country For Old Men and many more) working with producing partner Tricia Cooke\, doing what a Coen does best\, a superlative comedic crime caper. \nWhen the free spirited Jamie (Margaret Qualley – Once Upon A Time In Hollywood\, Poor Things) breaks up with her girlfriend (Beanie Feldstein – Ladybird\, Booksmart) she decides it’s time to take her demure (possibly uptight) housemate Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan – Hala\, Bad Education) on a road trip to Tallahassee. But things do not go as planned when the two inadvertently get tangled up in a ludicrous criminal plot that involves everyone from Pedro Pascal to Colman Domingo to Matt Damon. This quickfire little gem of a star studded queer road trip movie combines both that familiar off beat Coen Brothers feeling we all know and love as well as delivering a fresh\, slickly delivered\, cheerfully trashy B-movie vibe\, with lots of goofiness and lots of sex.
