SUMMARY:One Sings\, The Other Doesn't
DESCRIPTION:“I’ve had friends who’ve been very important in my life. In L’Une chante\, l’autre pas I’ve told their story as if it were a novel.” \nAfter a hiatus from making feature films to focus on having a family\, Varda’s return to filmmaking was largely inspired by her involvement in the French Women’s Movement of the 1970s\, which left a profound affect on her. In order to share her story she chose to present the film as a musical\, a genre more associated with the films of her late husband\, Jacques Demy. \nThis feminist decade-spanning musical is a chronicle of the friendship between Suzanne (Thérèse Liotard) and Pauline (Valérie Mairesse)\, who first meet in 1962 when Suzanne\, who is already a mother of two\, decides to get an abortion. The film then jumps ten years ahead\, finding the pair at very different stages in their lives\, both in regards to personal growth and social change. \nDoors from 7pm\, feature starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Bristol Bad Film Club presents… SAMURAI COP – Bath
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Bad Film Club is going on the road… and we’re bringing Samurai Cop to Bath!  \nImagine a low-budget version of Lethal Weapon where Mel Gibson spends most of his time being racist to the Japanese\, attempts to sleep with anything that moves and walks around in his pants a lot. That’s Samurai Cop\, but there is so much more to this cult film than that… \nDescribed as “both the best and the worst action film ever”\, Samurai Cop is an unintentionally hilarious action film that sees San Diego cop Joe ‘Samurai’ Marshall dispatched to stop the drug-trafficking Yakuza cartel – The Katana Gang. \nMade in 1990 by Iranian film maker Amir Shervan\, Samurai Cop is a perfect storm of 80s cop movie cliches\, over-the-top dialogue\, weird editing\, goofy fight scenes (that seem to constantly switch location) and a soundtrack that sounds like it belongs in a SEGA MasterSystem game. \nToday\, Samurai Cop is often described in the same breath as infamous ‘so bad\, they’re great’ films like The Room and Birdemic: Shock and Terror and the Bristol Bad Film Club are bringing it to Coventry! \nA cabal of Japanese mobsters known as the Katana Gang is taking over the streets of Los Angeles. With the regular police unable to stop them\, it’s up to maverick cop Joe “the Samurai” Marshal to use his sword and martial arts expertise to bring the crooks down. \nWhen: 7.30pm\, Monday 10th September 2018 \nLocation: Komedia\, 22-23 Westgate St\, Bath BA1 1EP \nTickets:  £8 \n“The party aspect in this movie is spectacular. From the sheer cheese of the main character’s behaviour to the gratuitous amounts of nudity\, everyone is guaranteed to get a laugh\, or at least an awkward boner…” BetterWithPopcorn.com \n“Amazingly hamfisted ineptitude… perhaps the most god-awful example of bungled\, inept action movie filmmaking of the 1980s” Brian Lindsey\, Eccentric Cinema \n“Defies all logic. It’s both the best and worst action movie ever” Andrew Martin\, Facebook.com/AmirShervan

SUMMARY:Black Panthers (1968) + Black Power Mixtape 1967 - 1975
DESCRIPTION:Scalarama Liverpool marks 50 years since 1968 to see what impact that revolutionary year had on the world and what can we learn from the past to deal with the current state of affairs. We’ll be launching the BLACK POWER strand of this programme with an event at the Black-E looking at the legacy of the Black Power movement in the US as seen by two European filmmakers. \nBLACK PANTHERS (1968) \nAgnès Varda\, 1968\, France\, 30mins \nWhilst she was living in the US\, famed filmmaker Agnès Varda turns her camera on an Oakland demonstration against the imprisonment of activist and Black Panthers cofounder Huey P. Newton. In addition to evincing Varda’s fascination with her adopted surroundings and her empathy\, this perceptive short is also a powerful political statement. \n+ \nBLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967 – 1975 \nGöran Olsson\, 2011\, Sweden/US\, 100mins\, partly in Swedish with English subtitles \nFrom 1967 to 1975\, fueled by curiosity and naïveté\, Swedish journalists traversed the ocean to film the black power movement in America. The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975 mobilizes a mosaic of images\, music\, and narration to chronicle the movement’s evolution. \nDoors: 6pm. Films: 6.30pm. \nTickets: Pay-what-you-can donation (recommended donation £5 / £4 concessions) BUY HERE >>  \nScreening supported by Uprising!: The Spirit of ‘68\, a major programme organised by the BFI Film Audience Network\, delivering funds from the National Lottery.

SUMMARY:Night of the Living Dead
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Wicked Wales Youth Film Festival \nGeorge Romero’s debut feature was not the first zombie film\, but it may be the best. This story of strangers battling an invasion of the undead defined and drove the genre. Its intensity still thrills\, while the unknown cast\, led by Duane Jones and Judith O’Dea\, carry Romero’s satirical take on the idea that home is where the heart is – something the army of remakes and homages have never matched. \nPart of Scalarama’s Uprising strand\, celebrating 50 years since 1968\, with the film selected by Wicked Cinema’s young programmers.

SUMMARY:Films We Love: Monsieur Hulot’s Holiday
DESCRIPTION:In the film that introduced the world to Jacques Tati’s memorable creation\, the affable yet clumsy M Hulot takes his vacation\, encountering all the delights and curiosities of a sunny seaside town. Whilst there he meets all sorts of people\, from the hotel proprietor\, to guests playing tennis\, restaurant staff and children\, who all come to know him through his well intentioned\, but blundering antics. Dialogue is minimal\, and rather Tati’s carefully constructed set-pieces exist to deliver the endless satisfaction when a sight-gag pays off. \n“Visually inventive and hugely influential\, in every scene Tati delights and surprises.” – Screen Machine team. \nWe know that some of our audiences want to see a broader range of films\, so\, alongside our usual programme\, between August – October this year we’re bringing six different films to six different locations. Each film has been chosen specially by one of six members from the Screen Machine team. This is an outstanding selection of international titles spanning decades\, a variety of genres and innovative filmmaking styles. We’ve delved deep into our fondest memories of cinema-going to choose films that inspire\, challenge and entertain. These are films we love – we hope you’ll love them too. \nAll films with English subtitles. Screen Machine has wheelchair access. If you are a wheelchair user\, we ask you to please call our office in advance in order that we can prepare in advance of your visit – (0131) 550 3734. We can book your ticket and arrange entry for any carer who may accompany you. For hearing aid users\, we have a personal inductive neckloop facility\, If you would find this facility useful\, please ask the operator or usher when you arrive. \nIf there are titles here that you want to see but won’t get the chance\, let us know! Or if you see one of the Films We Love\, tell us what you think. We’ll listen to all the feedback on this project and use it to inform our future programmes. SUMMARY:Off the Beaten Path
DESCRIPTION:For many of us from the first moment we enjoy the freedom that comes with riding a bike another thought occurs – where can I explore ? where will this bike take me ?  As riders have ventured further bikes have evolved to carry them on their journeys. \n“Off the Beaten Path” is an adventure cycling film celebrating the journeys we can take on bikes; and specifically focusing on how fatter tire bikes are allowing riders to venture to places cyclists have never been able to ride before. From desert dunes in Nevada to ice tunnels under Icelandic glaciers\, “Off the Beaten Path” showcases that we’re not limited to pavement or traditional dirt trails when it comes to cycling adventures. \nThe fat bike has opened up new places to ride and changed the perceptions\, and perspectives\, of trials riders\, snowboarders and even those just looking for the next big adventure. It seems that as riders\, and as people\, we’ll never stop exploring the possibilities on two wheels. \n

SUMMARY:Crumb at The Little Reliance Cinema | Thought Bubble festival
DESCRIPTION:A special Scalarama + Thought Bubble screening of the 1994 documentary Crumb by Terry Zwigoff. \n\nThe master of the misfit film\, Zwigoff creates a fascinating and intimate portrait of one of America’s most iconic\, innovative and prolific underground cartoonists\, Robert Crumb.\n\n\n\n\n\nCrumb’s notorious career began in 1968 with the publication of the first issue of Zap comix in San Francisco. He is an iconoclastic figure\, notorious curmudgeon and  self-confessed sexual deviant; his work has regularly provoked outrage from feminists but he claims he was just ‘born weird’. \n\n\n\nThis surprisingly confessional documentary was made over the course of 9 years\, with the participation of Robert’s cartoonist wife\, Aline\, and members of his dysfunctional family. Growing up\, the three reclusive Crumb brothers shared a private fantasy world of comics and art\, which shielded them from bullying and a violent home life. \n\nThe resulting film is an extraordinary exploration of the relationship between subculture\, mental illness and artistry.\n\n\n\nDoors are at 7.30 and there will be a short introduction before the film. Then join us in the bar afterwards for some drinks and film chat!\n\n\n \n\n\nDirector: Terry Zwigoff\n\n\nUSA | 1994 | 120 mins | Certificate 18\n\nThis is a Film Fringe event for Thought Bubble Comic Art Festival which runs from 17-23 in Leeds City Centre. SUMMARY:Young Adventurers Cinema : The Florida Project
DESCRIPTION:The Florida Project follows Moone a mischevious young girl and her friends as they explore the world around them\, living in a motel near Disneyland. The children have a dysfunctional life\, with irresponsible but caring parents. Sean Baker creates a film with sweetness and charm while dealing with poverty and family in America. \nI chose this film because upon seeing it I instantly fell in love with it\, the performance blew me away – Brooklynn Prince embodying a mischevious and naive little girl and Bria Vinaite as Hayley a well-meaning but ultimately reckless mother (acting for her first time). I think the film deals with an important topic beautifully through the eyes of a child. This is one of my favourite films and is definitely not one to miss. SUMMARY:A Hard Day's Night (1964)
DESCRIPTION:To echo the restoration of Yellow Submarine (1968) earlier this June\, there is more of The Beatles coming to Edinburgh this September! A Hard Day’s Night (1964) to start with on Friday 21st: to see where it all began\, to get ourselves into the pure black and white mischief and celebrate life! \nThe Beatles in their feature film debut\, one of the greatest rock-and-roll comedy adventures ever. SUMMARY:Grease (40th Anniversary!)
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, community cinema is Staying Alive\, and we’re going back to 1959 California with the fantastic and ground-breaking musical drama Grease. Directed by Randal Kleiser this 1978 film starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. It tells the story of Danny and Sandy who fall in love at the beach\, only to find themselves very much at odds\, at the same high school\, with Danny the leader of the notorious T Birds greaser gang and wholesome Sandy hanging out with the well-intentioned Pink Ladies. A rocky road lies ahead as each tries to emulate the other. Fun all the way and made all the more so because local group the Pop Up Singers will be entertaining before the film. Yes\, Grease is the one that we want\, chosen because our demographic loves a bit of nostalgia and\, well\, it’s a great film that deserves to be shown again… and again. Grease\, We’re Hopelessly Devoted to You.
