Esperanza Vásquez recovered its original script. Saved from oblivion by Dr. Aurelio de los Reyes over the past decades\, a set of forgotten nitrate cans were put together in between 2004 and 2014. The music was commissioned to José Ma. Serralde who composed and recorded the music with his Ensemble Cine Mudo\, a cue-sheet based semi-improvised score with the american-styled dance music introduced to Mexico through the radio\, and the music of Veracruz; all done after research in Orizaba\, where the sones and danzones\, meet the foxtrot. \nDoors open at: 19:00 hrs \nPerformance starts at: 20:00 hrs.

SUMMARY:Rosa Luxemburg
DESCRIPTION:Liverpool Left Film Club screens \nRosa Luxemburg (1986) \nDir. Margarethe von Trotta \nRosa Luxemburg was a towering figure on the revolutionary left of the German and Polish socialist movements. Born into a Jewish middle-class family\, she had\, by the age of 18 already been involved the organising of a general strike in Warsaw\, for which four leading figures were later executed. She fled to Switzerland in 1889 where she quickly became immersed in left émigré circles\, distinguishing herself as a brilliant exponent of Marxist theory and revolutionary strategy. \nBy 1897 she had moved to Germany and had become deeply involved in the Social Democratic Party (SPD)\, a party with a massive popular base. Again\, her brilliance brought her into prominence on the far left of the party\, where she formed a close and lifelong friendship with the German revolutionary Clara Zetkin\, and became aquainted with Vladimir Lenin and Nadezhda Krupskaya. \n\n\n\n\n\nAt that time the ‘evolutionary socialism’ of Eduard Bernstein was influential on the right of the SPD. Rosa Luxemburg was vehemently opposed to the idea that socialism might be achieved by any type of collaboration with ‘progressive’ sections of capital\, calling always for the revolutionary overthrow of the capitalist state. \nBut it was over the question of inter-imperialist war that she was to break decisively with the SPD. On 4 August 1914 the SPD deputies in the German Reishtag voted to pay war credits\, effectively ending their opposition to war. Rosa Luxemburg\, despairing of this complete surrender to patriotic war frenzy\, broke away to form the anti-war Marxist Spartacus League. The Spartacus League\, forerunner of the German Communist Party\, promoted an internationalist socialist message through the dark years of the First World War. \nWith Germany’s defeat in 1918\, revolutionary stirrings were evident in the working-class districts\, and by 1919 things came to a head in a rising that was violently supressed. Rosa Luxemburg and her close collaborator Karl Leibnicht were arrested by soldiers of the Friekorps\, brutalised war veterans. Both were murdered on 15 January 1919. \nVon Trotta’s film covers the years of 1900-1919\, during which we see Rosa Luxemburg in and out of prison for her activities\, developing Marxist economic and political theory\, and working tirelessly for international socialist revolution. \nBut von Trotta does something else. She shows us Rosa Luxemburg\, the woman: sometimes euphoric with the hope of socialism; sometimes in dark and lonely despair at the injustice of capitalism and the horrors of war; in love\, and out of love; dealing with the infighting of the German SPD; and also dealing with the men in her life. \nVon Trotta’s film is a masterpiece of political and personal biography. \nSomething not to be missed!

SUMMARY:Portrait of Jason
DESCRIPTION:On the night of December 2\, 1966\, Shirley Clarke and a tiny crew convened in her apartment at the Hotel Chelsea to make a film. There\, for twelve straight hours they filmed the inimitable Jason Holliday as he spun tales\, sang\, donned costumes and reminisced about his experiences as a gay hustler\, sometime houseboy and aspiring cabaret performer. The result is a mesmerizing portrait of a remarkable\, charming and tortured man\, who is by turns hilarious and heartbreaking. Part cinema verité and part fiction it remains one of the most remarkable films of American independent filmmaking. \nPart of Agnes & Shirley\, a She’s A Rebel mini-season looking the work of Agnes Varda and her self-described ‘double’ Shirley Clarke. \nShirley Clarke | 1967 | US | 105 mins

SUMMARY:Kaleidoscopic Realms: Japanese Experimental Shorts of the '70s & '80s
DESCRIPTION:A programme of short films by directors Naoto Yamakawa\, Nobuhiro Aihara and Toshio Matsumoto. \nThe films\, spanning from 1975 up until the mid ’80s\, range from abstract experimentalism to more recognisable narrative structures\, but all distort and challenge expectations of aesthetics\, storytelling and recognition of oneself on film. \nShort films often offer a fleeting insight into perspectives outwith our own experiences\, but this collection of shorts presents unexpected images\, sounds and ideas which linger with you\, utilising experimental techniques to convey connections across cultures. \nTickets are priced on a sliding scale\, based on your circumstances. There are three tiers: Free/£2\, £4/£6 and £8. (register for a free ticket via tickets@matchboxcineclub.com). SUMMARY:Liverpool Radical Film Festival presents: Macunaíma (1969)
DESCRIPTION:Liverpool Radical Film Festival presents the curated series Cannibals and Carnivals: A brief history of Brazilian underground cinema: 1964-1971. \nThe second offering of this collection is comedy Macunaima (Joaquim Pedro de Andrade\, 1969. Based on the 1928 book by Mário de Andrade\, the modern-day parable follows the misadventures of Macunaima\, a black man who is miraculously born to an old woman\, who is supposed to be of the indigenous peoples of Brasil\, in the jungles of the Amazon. Macunaima embarks on a quest to recover a magical stone from a rich city dweller. In this film\, the essentialist myth of the 3 Brazilian races\, white\, black\, and the original natives of Brazil\, is supposed to be represented through the protagonist\, his brothers\, and his mother. \nThroughout his adventures\, Macunaíma learns some tough lessons about Brazilian life and society. Macunaima functions as an allegorical representation of the turmoil of the Brazilian military coup. \nThe film will be introduced by Dr Anthony Killick and we invite you to share your thoughts after the screening. \n7pm // Kazamier Stockroom \nSuggested Donation £3

SUMMARY:Happy as Lazzaro
DESCRIPTION:Winner of Best Screenplay at last year’s Cannes Film Festival\, Italian writer-director Alice Rohrwacher’s Happy as Lazzaro is a beguiling and luminous magic realist fable which echoes the surrealist films of cinematic masters like Pier Paolo Pasolini\, Federico Fellini and Derek Jarman. \nBeautifully shot on super 16mm\, the film follows the sweet natured peasant Lazzaro (played wonderfully by newcomer Adriano Tardiolo) whose people-pleasing personality is often mistaken for simple-mindedness. Lazzaro is persuaded by the village ruler’s bleach blonde-haired son to help him fake his own kidnapping for ransom; however their plans take some unexpected and miraculous turns.
