SUMMARY:Bristol Bad Film Club presents… SAMURAI COP – Oxford
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Bad Film Club is going on the road… and we’re bringing Samurai Cop to Oxford!  \nImagine a low-budget version of Lethal Weapon where Mel Gibson spends most of his time being racist to the Japanese\, attempts to sleep with anything that moves and walks around in his pants a lot. That’s Samurai Cop\, but there is so much more to this cult film than that… \nDescribed as “both the best and the worst action film ever”\, Samurai Cop is an unintentionally hilarious action film that sees San Diego cop Joe ‘Samurai’ Marshall dispatched to stop the drug-trafficking Yakuza cartel – The Katana Gang. \nMade in 1990 by Iranian film maker Amir Shervan\, Samurai Cop is a perfect storm of 80s cop movie cliches\, over-the-top dialogue\, weird editing\, goofy fight scenes (that seem to constantly switch location) and a soundtrack that sounds like it belongs in a SEGA MasterSystem game. \nToday\, Samurai Cop is often described in the same breath as infamous ‘so bad\, they’re great’ films like The Room and Birdemic: Shock and Terror and the Bristol Bad Film Club are bringing it to Coventry! \nA cabal of Japanese mobsters known as the Katana Gang is taking over the streets of Los Angeles. With the regular police unable to stop them\, it’s up to maverick cop Joe “the Samurai” Marshal to use his sword and martial arts expertise to bring the crooks down. \nWhen: 9.00pm\, Thursday 25th October 2018 \nLocation: The Ultimate Picture Palace\, Jeune St\, Cowley Road\, Oxford OX4 1BN \n“The party aspect in this movie is spectacular. From the sheer cheese of the main character’s behaviour to the gratuitous amounts of nudity\, everyone is guaranteed to get a laugh\, or at least an awkward boner…” BetterWithPopcorn.com \n“Amazingly hamfisted ineptitude… perhaps the most god-awful example of bungled\, inept action movie filmmaking of the 1980s” Brian Lindsey\, Eccentric Cinema \n“Defies all logic. It’s both the best and worst action movie ever” Andrew Martin\, Facebook.com/AmirShervan

SUMMARY:Films We Love: Things to Come
DESCRIPTION:In Things to Come Isabelle Huppert plays Nathalie\, a philosophy professor navigating life in middle-age with a graceful defiance. Throughout Hansen-Løve’s absorbing film she faces a series of trying experiences including an unwell mother (screen legend Edith Scob)\, political protests\, marital infidelity and career compromises. Nathalie’s is a compelling and authentically told story\, as we see her teaching her students to question the notion of truth and undertake a journey that will ultimately see her grapple with the question of how to live well. \n“Probably the finest French actress in films today is Isabelle Huppert\, and in Things to Come we’re drawn deeply in to the daily concerns of one middle-class French family. It’s witty\, oddly uplifting and Huppert is superb.” – Screen Machine team. \nWe know that some of our audiences want to see a broader range of films\, so\, alongside our usual programme\, between August – October this year we’re bringing six different films to six different locations. Each film has been chosen specially by one of six members from the Screen Machine team. This is an outstanding selection of international titles spanning decades\, a variety of genres and innovative filmmaking styles. We’ve delved deep into our fondest memories of cinema-going to choose films that inspire\, challenge and entertain. These are films we love – we hope you’ll love them too. \nAll films with English subtitles. Screen Machine has wheelchair access. If you are a wheelchair user\, we ask you to please call our office in advance in order that we can prepare in advance of your visit – (0131) 550 3734. We can book your ticket and arrange entry for any carer who may accompany you. For hearing aid users\, we have a personal inductive neckloop facility\, If you would find this facility useful\, please ask the operator or usher when you arrive. \nIf there are titles here that you want to see but won’t get the chance\, let us know! Or if you see one of the Films We Love\, tell us what you think. We’ll listen to all the feedback on this project and use it to inform our future programmes. SUMMARY:Leeds Palestinian Film Festival: Film + Food Fundraiser
DESCRIPTION:Leeds Palestinian Film Festival Fundraiser \nWe need to raise funds for this year’s Film Festival in order to pay for some great films and travel expenses for speakers coming from other places. Please come and support us! \n\n\nAlong with a tasty Middle eastern buffet we’ll be showing one of our favourite Palestinian films\, The Wanted 18 a tale of talking cows and Palestinian rebellion. \n\nThe Wanted 18 recounts the true story of how the Palestinian neighbourhood of Beit Sahour near Bethlehem acquired a herd of 18 dairy cows and then had to hide them from the Israeli security forces when their existence was absurdly deemed a threat to national security.\nThis winning mix of documentary and clay-animation offers an unexpectedly humorous account of a West Bank town’s experience of the first Intifada\, a subject that doesn’t usually generate a lot of laughs in cinema. \n  \n\nSunday 30th September\, 15:00 -18:00\nWoodhouse Community Centre\, 197 Woodhouse St\, Leeds LS6 2NY\n\nhttps://www.woodhousecommunitycentre.com/ \n\n\nTickets are £10\, with some concessions for low income. \nBook via Eventbrite.https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/leeds–palestinian-film-festival-film-food-fundraiser-tickets-47889362372?utm_term=eventurl_text\n\n\n***If you are on a low income Pay As You Feel tickets will be available at the door***

SUMMARY:Three Billboards Outside Ebbing\, Missouri
DESCRIPTION:This was one of the sensations of 2017\, and was the closing film of the Leeds International Film Festival. It also won the Oakwood Cinema ‘audience choice’ vote earlier this year! \nThree Billboards is an unusual film; it deals with murder\, revenge\, grief and loss\, as well as police violence and racism\, but it is also darkly comic. It contains some excellent performances\, particular the three main protagonists: Frances McDormand as a woman who takes matters into her own hands after the murder of her daughter\, Woody Harrleson as the local police chief\, and Sam Rockwell as a singularly incompetent and violent police officer. (Please note: Contains some explicit language.) \n  \nOakwood Cinema is an organisation run by volunteers to help bring our community together and to provide an independent local cinema for the residents of Oakwood and Roundhay in Leeds.

SUMMARY:Images of Apartheid + Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Images of Apartheid: Filmmaking on the Fringe in the Old South Africa (Calum Waddell\, 2018) \nMatchbox Cineclub and Africa in Motion (AiM) film festival present the untold story of the B Movies that flourished under the brutal regime of race-segregation and political persecution. \nFrom the maker of 42nd Street Memories and American Grindhouse\, Images of Apartheid uncovers the likes of Joe Bullet (1973)\, Fishy Stones (1979) and Umbango (1986)\, blaxploitation productions devised as entertainment for African natives forced into dilapidated townships. \nProducer/editor/cinematographer Naomi Holwill joins us for a post screening Q&A. \nThis event is part of the Scalarama Glasgow 2018 programme #Scalarama2018 \nThis event is free but ticketed: bit.ly/IOAGlasgow \n \n\nThis screening takes place in association with Kinning Park Complex‘s Waste Not Want Project which hosts a weekly Pay-What-You-Want Community Meal that intercepts surplus food from supermarkets which is destined for waste and creates nutritious meals for the community. The meal happens every Thursday from 6-8pm. \nThe Waste Not Want Project is funded by the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund. Since its inception in 2016\, the community kitchen at KPC has prevented 67\,382kg of CO2 emissions\, an amount of carbon emissions equivalent to those released to produce 5 tonnes of beef. Considering the amount of meat the average person eats\, this is enough to feed 117 people for a whole year.

SUMMARY:La Belle et la Bête
DESCRIPTION:More beautiful than ever in a new 4K digital restoration\, Jean Cocteau’s spellbinding\, sensuous and poetic masterpiece was recently described by Guillermo del Toro as ‘the most perfect cinematic fable ever told’. \nA hapless merchant\, lost in a dark forest\, seeks refuge in the castle of a hideous monster who threatens to kill him unless one of his three daughters will agree to take his place. But when Beauty appears\, the Beast falls madly in love with her. Hauntingly portrayed by Jean Marais\, the Beast is all repressed lust and melancholy refinement\, while Beauty (Josette Day) is no mere damsel in distress\, overcoming her fears to explore a glittering\, shadowy realm which abounds in supernatural terrors and delights. Might she secretly relish this adventure which will help unlock her deepest desires?

SUMMARY:Films We Love: Cleo from 5 to 7
DESCRIPTION:Cleo\, a singer living in Paris\, awaits the test results of a biopsy – she meets friends\, makes friends\, wanders the city and attempts to deal with the limbo-like state of waiting. Writer/Director Agnès Varda vividly captures the atmosphere of Paris in the 1960s\, unfolding the narrative in real time to create a nimble\, spirited and utterly modern portrait of Cleo’s life in a day. \n“Varda\, once unjustly overlooked\, is now at age 90 considered a legend of cinema\, having received an Honorary Oscar in 2017. Her second film\, Cleo from 5 to 7\, looks stunning\, it’s funny\, stylish and thoughtful\, and pretty much a total joy.” – Screen Machine team. SUMMARY:The Passion of Joan of Arc (35mm) + Live Score from Heliopause and This Ship Argo
DESCRIPTION:Marking the 108th anniversary of the Duke of York’s and the 90th anniversary of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s powerful masterwork The Passion of Joan of Arc\, Scalarama and the Duke’s are presenting this seminal silent film from a rare 35mm print with a new and original live score performed by Heliopause and This Ship Argo. \nThis landmark of cinema\, made in 1928\, depicts one of history’s most captivating women\, played by Renée Jeanne Falconetti in her only film role\, but one that has gone down the annals of cinema as one of the most astonishing performances ever committed to film. Receiving visions as a teenage peasant girl\, Joan of Arc managed to convince the King of France to let her lead his armies in order to drive the English from France. After several successful battles\, she was subsequently captured\, held to trial and burnt at the stake\, only aged 19. The French film focuses on the transcripts of her trial in 1431 as the French clerical court tried to discredit her claim that she was sent on the mission by God. \nThe film will be accompanied by a new original live score by musicians Heliopause & This Ship Argo\, using layered vocal loops and electronica to emphasise the film’s unusual cinematography and portrayal of Joan’s emotional state of mind.

SUMMARY:Grease (40th Anniversary!)
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, community cinema is Staying Alive\, and we’re going back to 1959 California with the fantastic and ground-breaking musical drama Grease. Directed by Randal Kleiser this 1978 film starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. It tells the story of Danny and Sandy who fall in love at the beach\, only to find themselves very much at odds\, at the same high school\, with Danny the leader of the notorious T Birds greaser gang and wholesome Sandy hanging out with the well-intentioned Pink Ladies. A rocky road lies ahead as each tries to emulate the other. Fun all the way and made all the more so because local group the Pop Up Singers will be entertaining before the film. Yes\, Grease is the one that we want\, chosen because our demographic loves a bit of nostalgia and\, well\, it’s a great film that deserves to be shown again… and again. Grease\, We’re Hopelessly Devoted to You.

SUMMARY:A Hard Day's Night (1964)
DESCRIPTION:To echo the restoration of Yellow Submarine (1968) earlier this June\, there is more of The Beatles coming to Edinburgh this September! A Hard Day’s Night (1964) to start with on Friday 21st: to see where it all began\, to get ourselves into the pure black and white mischief and celebrate life! \nThe Beatles in their feature film debut\, one of the greatest rock-and-roll comedy adventures ever. The film takes on the just-left-of-reality style of mock-documentary\, following “a day in the life” of John\, Paul\, George\, and Ringo as fame takes them by storm. \nThis screening will also mark the beginning of Curious Cat | Cinema Club\, a small new independent film club in Haymarket\, an odd cinephile’s bunker\, a cosy retreat for those who share a passion for earthly\, atmospheric and visually bewitching cinema that never fails to surprise. \nTickets on the door – CASH only! \nhttps://youtu.be/TWbiVqlSMgc
