SUMMARY:Bristol Bad Film Club presents... SAMURAI COP - Malvern
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Bad Film Club is going on the road… and we’re bringing Samurai Cop to Malvern!  \nImagine a low-budget version of Lethal Weapon where Mel Gibson spends most of his time being racist to the Japanese\, attempts to sleep with anything that moves and walks around in his pants a lot. That’s Samurai Cop\, but there is so much more to this cult film than that… \nDescribed as “both the best and the worst action film ever”\, Samurai Cop is an unintentionally hilarious action film that sees San Diego cop Joe ‘Samurai’ Marshall dispatched to stop the drug-trafficking Yakuza cartel – The Katana Gang. \nMade in 1990 by Iranian film maker Amir Shervan\, Samurai Cop is a perfect storm of 80s cop movie cliches\, over-the-top dialogue\, weird editing\, goofy fight scenes (that seem to constantly switch location) and a soundtrack that sounds like it belongs in a SEGA MasterSystem game. \nToday\, Samurai Cop is often described in the same breath as infamous ‘so bad\, they’re great’ films like The Room and Birdemic: Shock and Terror and the Bristol Bad Film Club are bringing it to Coventry! \nA cabal of Japanese mobsters known as the Katana Gang is taking over the streets of Los Angeles. With the regular police unable to stop them\, it’s up to maverick cop Joe “the Samurai” Marshal to use his sword and martial arts expertise to bring the crooks down. \nWhen: 8.00pm\, Friday 7th September 2018 \nLocation: Malvern Theatre\, Grange Rd\, Malvern WR14 3HB \nTickets:  £9 \n“The party aspect in this movie is spectacular. From the sheer cheese of the main character’s behaviour to the gratuitous amounts of nudity\, everyone is guaranteed to get a laugh\, or at least an awkward boner…” BetterWithPopcorn.com \n“Amazingly hamfisted ineptitude… perhaps the most god-awful example of bungled\, inept action movie filmmaking of the 1980s” Brian Lindsey\, Eccentric Cinema \n“Defies all logic. It’s both the best and worst action movie ever” Andrew Martin\, Facebook.com/AmirShervan

SUMMARY:La Pointe Courte
DESCRIPTION:“I felt I needed to invent my cinema. With La Pointe Courte\, I just jumped in\, in the most radical fashion.” \nAnticipating the style and attitude of the French New Wave by a number of years\, Agnès Varda’s directorial debut remains as fresh and as original as the day it was made. \nLa Pointe Courte follows two different stories\, a government inspector’s visit\, and a couple facing the tribulations of a relationship crisis\, set against the backdrop of the titular Mediterranean fishing town. Silvia Monfort and Philippe Noiret (in his onscreen debut) exceptionally play the married couple drifting through life and their relationship troubles at the forefront of the film. \nRemarkably assured and insightful\, the film bears the realist approach\, social comment and filmmaking flair that would later become hallmarks in Varda’s filmography. \nDoors from 7pm\, feature starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Films We Love: Urok/The Lesson
DESCRIPTION:In The Lesson\, school teacher Nadezhda (Margita Gosheva) struggles against the odds to keep her home\, her family and her integrity intact. An act of theft in her classroom is just the beginning of an escalating series of challenges\, as Nadezhda faces financial precarity at home that sees her seek ever more risky solutions. The ethical questions that The Lesson poses are realised with a deft naturalism of performance and rhythm that draws you in and holds you throughout. \n“Writer/directors Grozeva and Valchanov keep the pace swift and the tension high in this utterly absorbing and thought-provoking drama.” – Screen Machine team \nWe know that some of our audiences want to see a broader range of films\, so\, alongside our usual programme\, between August – October this year we’re bringing six different films to six different locations. Each film has been chosen specially by one of six members from the Screen Machine team. This is an outstanding selection of international titles spanning decades\, a variety of genres and innovative filmmaking styles. We’ve delved deep into our fondest memories of cinema-going to choose films that inspire\, challenge and entertain. These are films we love – we hope you’ll love them too. \nAll films with English subtitles. Screen Machine has wheelchair access. If you are a wheelchair user\, we ask you to please call our office in advance in order that we can prepare in advance of your visit – (0131) 550 3734. We can book your ticket and arrange entry for any carer who may accompany you. For hearing aid users\, we have a personal inductive neckloop facility\, If you would find this facility useful\, please ask the operator or usher when you arrive. \nIf there are titles here that you want to see but won’t get the chance\, let us know! Or if you see one of the Films We Love\, tell us what you think. We’ll listen to all the feedback on this project and use it to inform our future programmes. SUMMARY:Jeune Femme
DESCRIPTION:France’s answer to Fleabag sees Laetitia Dosch explode onto the screen as Paula in Léonor Serraille’s debut film Jeune Femme\, a live-wire comedy and an excessive exercise in humour and urgency which explores modern life’s everyday misfortunes. \nBack in Paris after a long absence and finding the key to her boyfriend’s apartment no longer works\, Paula goes on an erratic “voyage de la loon” around the city – broken-hearted\, self-destructive\, and with only her ex’s cat’s deadpan stares to rely on. By her nature unable to do anything but live int he moment\, we watch as Paula tries her best to reclaim a measure of stability\, making new allies and seeing the reappearance of figures from her past. \n“Thrillingly capturing both time and place and fizzing with non-judgemental empathy and cinematic flair\, this is a magnificent debut that catapults Laetitia Dosch into the front rank of French actresses”\nDavid Parkinson\, EMPIRE

SUMMARY:You Were Never Really Here
DESCRIPTION:From the director of Ratcatcher and We Need To Talk About Kevin\, You Were Never Really Here is the brutal and defiantly masterful new film by uncompromising British filmmaker Lynne Ramsay\, and stars an ever-excellent Joaquin Phenoix as a damaged Gulf War veteran and former FBI agent turned assassin for hire\, tasked with rescuing a U.S. senator’s daughter from an upscale brothel\, as well as taking out the perpetrators responsible for her kidnapping. \nRecalling many of the harrowing themes found in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver\, and aided by Thomas Townend’s remarkable cinematography and Jonny Greenwood’s immersive electronic score\, this inventive thriller is a devastating portrayal of a man wrestling with years of repression and abuse while engaged in a cycle of violence he cannot control. \n“…an overwhelming experience\, a slice of pure cinema from a director who refuses to dance to the beat of anyone’s drum but her own. From the disorienting opening to the enigmatic finale\, Lynne Ramsay is always really here\, her commanding vision shining through every frame”\nMark Kermode\, The Guardian

SUMMARY:Femmetopia Festival: Behind the Scenes at the Sodom Odeon: An Afternoon with Jane Giles
DESCRIPTION:‘The Scala had magic. It was like joining a very secret club\, like a biker gang or something… They could show films uncut because they had memberships\, well that’s insane! It’s like they were a country club for criminals and lunatics and people that were high… Which is a good way to see movies’ – John Waters \nOr\, the story of how a film-loving girl from a small town in Sussex became programmer of the UK’s queerest cinema\, the notorious and influential Scala in King’s Cross. Drawing on photographs from her forthcoming book about the history of the Scala cinema from 1978-1993\, Jane Giles will talk about the wild life and times of this legendary venue and the diverse audience tribes who made it their own. \nJane Giles was the provocative programmer of the Scala\, the legendary cinema that banned Shane McGowan for his exploits during an All-Nighter\, fought the ‘Video Nasties’ bill and was prosecuted for showing A Clockwork Orange. Alongside witnesses and associates\, Jane reveals the highs\, lows\, thrills and spills of this notorious and influential rep cinema in a discussion that looks at how art can take on the law\, all for the most perverse causes.

SUMMARY:Atmosphere | A Zed & Two Noughts
DESCRIPTION:Peter Greenaway’s visually stunning 1985 film was the first with his “most important collaborator” cinematographer Sacha Vierny. A story of twin zoologists Oswald and Oliver Deuce who\, after losing their wives in a freak car collision with a swan outside the zoo where they work\, develop a curious attachment to the car’s driver Alba\, who survived. \nDeveloped in collaboration with DCN Design Fellow Susana Cámara Leret\, this is our first Atmosphere event in the Alt-w LAB and our first as part of Scalarama. Punctuated by the dulcet tones of Sir David Attenborough and the influence of Johannes Vermeer\, the film is a rumination on life\, love and sex and the inevitability of birth\, death and decay.
