SUMMARY:POSTPONED: Sin Bin of the City & Whose Streets?
DESCRIPTION:EVENT POSTPONED\nDue to some unforeseen circumstances\, we will be postponing this event – we will look to reschedule this for mid-late October. Apologies for any inconvenience this has caused. \n————————————————– \nScalarama Liverpool\, a month-long film season across Merseyside\, marks 50 years since 1968 to see what impact that revolutionary year had on the world and what can we learn from the past to deal with the current state of affairs. As part of our BLACK POWER strand of this programme\, we host an event in Liverpool 8 looking at black activism past and present. \nStarting with short film SIN BIN OF THE CITY made by local filmmaker James Arthur Armstrong about the 1981 Toxteth Riots/Uprisings\, followed by WHOSE STREETS? (Sabaah Folayan & Damon Davis\, 2017) about the uprising which followed the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson\, Missouri. \n“An essential testament to the commitment of activists\, told in their own fervent voices.” – Hollywood Reporter. \nWe are pleased to welcome filmmaker James Arthur Armstrong to the screening to discuss his film. \nThe screening will be followed by discussion. Join us at Kuumba Imani for some food before the screening from 6pm. Films will start at 6.30pm. \nTickets: Pay-what-you-can donation (recommended donation £5 / £4 concessions) BUY HERE >>  \n#UPRISING #DIRECTEDBYWOMEN

SUMMARY:Night of the Living Dead
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Wicked Wales Youth Film Festival \nGeorge Romero’s debut feature was not the first zombie film\, but it may be the best. This story of strangers battling an invasion of the undead defined and drove the genre. Its intensity still thrills\, while the unknown cast\, led by Duane Jones and Judith O’Dea\, carry Romero’s satirical take on the idea that home is where the heart is – something the army of remakes and homages have never matched. \nPart of Scalarama’s Uprising strand\, celebrating 50 years since 1968\, with the film selected by Wicked Cinema’s young programmers.

SUMMARY:Black Panthers (1968) + Black Power Mixtape 1967 - 1975
DESCRIPTION:Scalarama Liverpool marks 50 years since 1968 to see what impact that revolutionary year had on the world and what can we learn from the past to deal with the current state of affairs. We’ll be launching the BLACK POWER strand of this programme with an event at the Black-E looking at the legacy of the Black Power movement in the US as seen by two European filmmakers. \nBLACK PANTHERS (1968) \nAgnès Varda\, 1968\, France\, 30mins \nWhilst she was living in the US\, famed filmmaker Agnès Varda turns her camera on an Oakland demonstration against the imprisonment of activist and Black Panthers cofounder Huey P. Newton. In addition to evincing Varda’s fascination with her adopted surroundings and her empathy\, this perceptive short is also a powerful political statement. \n+ \nBLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967 – 1975 \nGöran Olsson\, 2011\, Sweden/US\, 100mins\, partly in Swedish with English subtitles \nFrom 1967 to 1975\, fueled by curiosity and naïveté\, Swedish journalists traversed the ocean to film the black power movement in America. The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975 mobilizes a mosaic of images\, music\, and narration to chronicle the movement’s evolution. \nDoors: 6pm. Films: 6.30pm. \nTickets: Pay-what-you-can donation (recommended donation £5 / £4 concessions) BUY HERE >>  \nScreening supported by Uprising!: The Spirit of ‘68\, a major programme organised by the BFI Film Audience Network\, delivering funds from the National Lottery.

SUMMARY:Joe Dante's The Movie Orgy
DESCRIPTION:The Movie Orgy (Joe Dante\, 1968) 280 minutes \nA mind-bending predecessor to the modern mash-up\, The Movie Orgy is also the Rosetta Stone for Joe Dante’s oeuvre and a must-experience for movie fans and cinephiles alike. \nBefore The ‘Burbs\, before Gremlins\, before The Howling\, before he started his career cutting trailers for Roger Corman\, director Joe Dante made The Movie Orgy. An evolving compilation of serials\, film clips\, ads and film trailers\, originally Dante and his collaborator Jon Davison “mixed” The Movie Orgy live\, switching between two projectors to make a reactive\, free-flowing\, communal live experience. \nThis 50th anniversary screening is extremely rare\, and it’s only the 4th European screening in 20 years. At its longest\, it ran 7.5 hours. The current version is 4.5 hours long and screens from Dante’s own digital edit. \nNB As Dante says\, “You can leave the room\, go out and buy popcorn or a beer\, come back ten minutes later\, a little more cheerful.” \nThis free-but-ticketed event is part of the Scalarama Glasgow 2018 programme. \nFree tix: bit.ly/movieorgy  \nThanks to Joe Dante & Renfield Productions
