SUMMARY:Films We Love: Cleo from 5 to 7
DESCRIPTION:Cleo\, a singer living in Paris\, awaits the test results of a biopsy – she meets friends\, makes friends\, wanders the city and attempts to deal with the limbo-like state of waiting. Writer/Director Agnès Varda vividly captures the atmosphere of Paris in the 1960s\, unfolding the narrative in real time to create a nimble\, spirited and utterly modern portrait of Cleo’s life in a day. \n“Varda\, once unjustly overlooked\, is now at age 90 considered a legend of cinema\, having received an Honorary Oscar in 2017. Her second film\, Cleo from 5 to 7\, looks stunning\, it’s funny\, stylish and thoughtful\, and pretty much a total joy.” – Screen Machine team. \nWe know that some of our audiences want to see a broader range of films\, so\, alongside our usual programme\, between August – October this year we’re bringing six different films to six different locations. Each film has been chosen specially by one of six members from the Screen Machine team. This is an outstanding selection of international titles spanning decades\, a variety of genres and innovative filmmaking styles. We’ve delved deep into our fondest memories of cinema-going to choose films that inspire\, challenge and entertain. These are films we love – we hope you’ll love them too. \nAll films with English subtitles. Screen Machine has wheelchair access. If you are a wheelchair user\, we ask you to please call our office in advance in order that we can prepare in advance of your visit – (0131) 550 3734. We can book your ticket and arrange entry for any carer who may accompany you. For hearing aid users\, we have a personal inductive neckloop facility\, If you would find this facility useful\, please ask the operator or usher when you arrive. \nIf there are titles here that you want to see but won’t get the chance\, let us know! Or if you see one of the Films We Love\, tell us what you think. We’ll listen to all the feedback on this project and use it to inform our future programmes. SUMMARY:Night of the Living Dead
DESCRIPTION:Part of the Wicked Wales Youth Film Festival \nGeorge Romero’s debut feature was not the first zombie film\, but it may be the best. This story of strangers battling an invasion of the undead defined and drove the genre. Its intensity still thrills\, while the unknown cast\, led by Duane Jones and Judith O’Dea\, carry Romero’s satirical take on the idea that home is where the heart is – something the army of remakes and homages have never matched. \nPart of Scalarama’s Uprising strand\, celebrating 50 years since 1968\, with the film selected by Wicked Cinema’s young programmers.

SUMMARY:Black Panthers (1968) + Black Power Mixtape 1967 - 1975
DESCRIPTION:Scalarama Liverpool marks 50 years since 1968 to see what impact that revolutionary year had on the world and what can we learn from the past to deal with the current state of affairs. We’ll be launching the BLACK POWER strand of this programme with an event at the Black-E looking at the legacy of the Black Power movement in the US as seen by two European filmmakers. \nBLACK PANTHERS (1968) \nAgnès Varda\, 1968\, France\, 30mins \nWhilst she was living in the US\, famed filmmaker Agnès Varda turns her camera on an Oakland demonstration against the imprisonment of activist and Black Panthers cofounder Huey P. Newton. In addition to evincing Varda’s fascination with her adopted surroundings and her empathy\, this perceptive short is also a powerful political statement. \n+ \nBLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967 – 1975 \nGöran Olsson\, 2011\, Sweden/US\, 100mins\, partly in Swedish with English subtitles \nFrom 1967 to 1975\, fueled by curiosity and naïveté\, Swedish journalists traversed the ocean to film the black power movement in America. The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975 mobilizes a mosaic of images\, music\, and narration to chronicle the movement’s evolution. \nDoors: 6pm. Films: 6.30pm. \nTickets: Pay-what-you-can donation (recommended donation £5 / £4 concessions) BUY HERE >>  \nScreening supported by Uprising!: The Spirit of ‘68\, a major programme organised by the BFI Film Audience Network\, delivering funds from the National Lottery.

SUMMARY:One Sings\, The Other Doesn't
DESCRIPTION:“I’ve had friends who’ve been very important in my life. In L’Une chante\, l’autre pas I’ve told their story as if it were a novel.” \nAfter a hiatus from making feature films to focus on having a family\, Varda’s return to filmmaking was largely inspired by her involvement in the French Women’s Movement of the 1970s\, which left a profound affect on her. In order to share her story she chose to present the film as a musical\, a genre more associated with the films of her late husband\, Jacques Demy. \nThis feminist decade-spanning musical is a chronicle of the friendship between Suzanne (Thérèse Liotard) and Pauline (Valérie Mairesse)\, who first meet in 1962 when Suzanne\, who is already a mother of two\, decides to get an abortion. The film then jumps ten years ahead\, finding the pair at very different stages in their lives\, both in regards to personal growth and social change. \nDoors from 7pm\, feature starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:The Gleaners and I
DESCRIPTION:During the dawn of the digital age in the late 1990s and early 2000s\, The Gleaners and Iemerged as one of the first true masterpieces to evolve from the new and (at the time) relatively unexplored format. Taken from the old pastime of gleaning (collecting leftover crops from fields after they have been harvested)\, Varda’s documentary focuses on modern-day gleaners\, allowing these marginalised people speak for themselves and address everything from world politics to personal tragedies\, whilst Varda herself questions her own morality in the process. \nPart social critique\, part travelogue\, this eccentric and eye-opening documentary is an unsentimental celebration of human resilience and how we should look out for those who survive on the margins of society and listen to their stories without judgement. \n“Of all the movies I’ve seen in the past several years\, this is one of the ones I love the most”\nMichael Wilmington\, Chicago Tribune

SUMMARY:Cléo from 5 to 7
DESCRIPTION:Shot in Paris during the height of the Sixties\, Varda’s second film Cléo from 5 to 7 tells the story of Cléo\, a pop singer who passes her time drifting through different locations and conversations while awaiting the results of a vital and potentially life-changing medical examination. \nA forerunner to the French New Wave\, Cléo from 5 to 7 was a truly trailblazing exercise in film narrative\, shot in a documentary-like fashion to capture reality as true-to-life as cinematically possible. The film also has a famous ‘silent film-within-a-film’ segment\, which all film connoisseurs will love\, as it contains cameos by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina. \n“As innovative and influential as any New Wave film”\nRoger Ebert\, Chicago Sun-Times

SUMMARY:Joe Dante's The Movie Orgy
DESCRIPTION:The Movie Orgy (Joe Dante\, 1968) 280 minutes \nA mind-bending predecessor to the modern mash-up\, The Movie Orgy is also the Rosetta Stone for Joe Dante’s oeuvre and a must-experience for movie fans and cinephiles alike. \nBefore The ‘Burbs\, before Gremlins\, before The Howling\, before he started his career cutting trailers for Roger Corman\, director Joe Dante made The Movie Orgy. An evolving compilation of serials\, film clips\, ads and film trailers\, originally Dante and his collaborator Jon Davison “mixed” The Movie Orgy live\, switching between two projectors to make a reactive\, free-flowing\, communal live experience. \nThis 50th anniversary screening is extremely rare\, and it’s only the 4th European screening in 20 years. At its longest\, it ran 7.5 hours. The current version is 4.5 hours long and screens from Dante’s own digital edit. \nNB As Dante says\, “You can leave the room\, go out and buy popcorn or a beer\, come back ten minutes later\, a little more cheerful.” \nThis free-but-ticketed event is part of the Scalarama Glasgow 2018 programme. \nFree tix: bit.ly/movieorgy  \nThanks to Joe Dante & Renfield Productions

SUMMARY:La Pointe Courte
DESCRIPTION:“I felt I needed to invent my cinema. With La Pointe Courte\, I just jumped in\, in the most radical fashion.” \nAnticipating the style and attitude of the French New Wave by a number of years\, Agnès Varda’s directorial debut remains as fresh and as original as the day it was made. \nLa Pointe Courte follows two different stories\, a government inspector’s visit\, and a couple facing the tribulations of a relationship crisis\, set against the backdrop of the titular Mediterranean fishing town. Silvia Monfort and Philippe Noiret (in his onscreen debut) exceptionally play the married couple drifting through life and their relationship troubles at the forefront of the film. \nRemarkably assured and insightful\, the film bears the realist approach\, social comment and filmmaking flair that would later become hallmarks in Varda’s filmography. \nDoors from 7pm\, feature starts at 7:30pm
