SUMMARY:The Connection (Shirley Clarke\, USA\, 1964)
DESCRIPTION:“The quartet of musicians\, led by the pianist and composer Freddie Redd and the caustic-toned post-bop saxophonist Jackie McLean\, perform brilliantly on-camera as they dramatize both the agonized wait and the needed high…”— Richard Brody\, New Yorker\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn a cramped and dirty New York apartment\, eight junkies variously goof off\, chat and play jazz music while waiting for their heroin connection to show up. They’ve also struck a deal with documentary filmmaker Jim Dunn (William Redfield): they’ll let him film them provided he pays for their drugs. What could possibly go wrong…? The Connection was legendary cult film-maker Shirley Clarke’s debut feature – and a very early example of the ‘found-footage’ genre of film. (And the jazz is great too!)

SUMMARY:Scala Cinema Book Launch Party
DESCRIPTION:It was the legendary cinema that banned Shane McGowan for his exploits during an All-Nighter\, fought the ‘Video Nasties’ bill and was prosecuted for showing A Clockwork Orange… 25 years later the Scala Cinema is back for one night only to launch a new book featuring the complete collection of its iconic monthly programmes from 1978-1993. \nAuthor and former Scala programmer Jane Giles reveals the highs\, lows\, thrills and spills of this notorious and influential rep cinema\, whose audience then included many of today’s most exciting filmmakers. Published by FAB Press\, the Scala Cinema book has been subsidised thanks to the generosity of some film industry folk\, and crowd funded by Indiegogo. \nPresented by Scalarama\, the book launch event will be a night of film highlights\, music & dancing\, special guests\, free Space Invaders tournaments and surprises! The headline act is now confirmed as composer Simon Boswell and his band AND performing live his scores for Scala classics by Dario Argento\, Alejandro Jodorowsky and Richard Stanley. \nReuniting Scala staff and audiences alike\, the venue will once again celebrate the Psychotronic\, Kung Fu\, horror\, cult\, music and LGBT+ films of the Scala’s vibrant daily changing programme. Everyone welcome. The Scala Cinema book will be on sale at the event or can be pre-ordered at www.fabpress.com \nTickets are £10 in advance from Scala: https://scala.co.uk/events/scala-cinema-book-launch-party

SUMMARY:Femmetopia Festival: Behind the Scenes at the Sodom Odeon: An Afternoon with Jane Giles
DESCRIPTION:‘The Scala had magic. It was like joining a very secret club\, like a biker gang or something… They could show films uncut because they had memberships\, well that’s insane! It’s like they were a country club for criminals and lunatics and people that were high… Which is a good way to see movies’ – John Waters \nOr\, the story of how a film-loving girl from a small town in Sussex became programmer of the UK’s queerest cinema\, the notorious and influential Scala in King’s Cross. Drawing on photographs from her forthcoming book about the history of the Scala cinema from 1978-1993\, Jane Giles will talk about the wild life and times of this legendary venue and the diverse audience tribes who made it their own. \nJane Giles was the provocative programmer of the Scala\, the legendary cinema that banned Shane McGowan for his exploits during an All-Nighter\, fought the ‘Video Nasties’ bill and was prosecuted for showing A Clockwork Orange. Alongside witnesses and associates\, Jane reveals the highs\, lows\, thrills and spills of this notorious and influential rep cinema in a discussion that looks at how art can take on the law\, all for the most perverse causes.
