SUMMARY:DRIVE AWAY DYKES
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 7.30pm    Start: 8.00pm\n\n\n\n\nYes\, that’s right\, we are using the original title. Drive Away Dykes or as it was stupidly re-christened by the movie studio\, Drive Away Dolls is the product of legendary director Ethan Coen (who with brother Joel\, created the likes of Raising Arizona\, Fargo\, The Big Lebowski\, O’ Brother Where Art Thou?\, No Country For Old Men and many more) working with producing partner Tricia Cooke\, doing what a Coen does best\, a superlative comedic crime caper. \nWhen the free spirited Jamie (Margaret Qualley – Once Upon A Time In Hollywood\, Poor Things) breaks up with her girlfriend (Beanie Feldstein – Ladybird\, Booksmart) she decides it’s time to take her demure (possibly uptight) housemate Marian (Geraldine Viswanathan – Hala\, Bad Education) on a road trip to Tallahassee. But things do not go as planned when the two inadvertently get tangled up in a ludicrous criminal plot that involves everyone from Pedro Pascal to Colman Domingo to Matt Damon. This quickfire little gem of a star studded queer road trip movie combines both that familiar off beat Coen Brothers feeling we all know and love as well as delivering a fresh\, slickly delivered\, cheerfully trashy B-movie vibe\, with lots of goofiness and lots of sex.

SUMMARY:Psychomania
DESCRIPTION:Everybody dies\, don’t they? But some come back… how do the dead come back\, mother? \n  \nPsychomania is a quintessential example of British B-movie sleaze. Byronic biker gang leader Tom (Nicky Henson) lives in a glam-rock Gothic mansion with his psychic mother (Beryl Reid) and her butler (George Sanders)\, and yearns to discover the secret of immortality. When he finds it hidden in a locked room in the house\, he returns from the dead in a suicidal ritual\, and convinces his acolytes to follow his example and form an invincible army of juvenile delinquent motorcyclists. Can the police and Tom’s mother protect the country lanes and suburban streets of Surrey from this undead menace? \nWith a mixture of folk horror\, black humour\, flower power and teen melodrama\, Psychomania is an utterly bonkers 70s genre flick with an enduring cult following. Have you been initiated yet?

SUMMARY:HEARTS OF DARKNESS: A FILMMAKER'S APOCALYPSE
DESCRIPTION:Doors: 7.30pm    Film: 8.00pm \nWith the impending release of The Godfather director Francis Ford Coppola’s self financed 120 million dollar potential masterpiece / disaster-piece Megalopolis\, and it’s accompanying discussion / bizarre controversy surrounding it’s production\, we take a look back at the king of all madcap Coppola productions with this remarkable film documenting the sheer insanity surrounding the production of Coppola’s undoubted 1979 masterpiece\, Apocalypse Now. \nCombining archival footage shot by Francis Coppola’s wife Eleanor and interviews shot later with those involved in the making of the film such as Robert Duvall\, Dennis Hopper\, George Lucas\, John Milius\, & Martin Sheen\, ‘Hearts of Darkness’ delves into the psyche of an artist on the edge as Coppola wrestles with his famed uncompromising artistic vision in the face of a $31 million dollar (easily $200+ million in today’s money) production of staggering technical and physical complexity. \nFilmed in the forests of Philippines\, the production deals with everything from severe shooting conditions and cast and crew problems\, to life threatening illnesses and natural disasters\, all in pursuit of Coppola’s mad undefinable vision of a Vietnam war epic that has become both the textbook example of late 70s filmmaking excess\, as well as one of the towering achievements of America’s golden age of modern cinema. \nTruly one of the great films about filmmaking\, the descent into near madness for Coppola is fascinating to watch as he chases his vision and nearly loses all sense of reality in an up river journey into the jungle almost as bizarre and wild as the ones experienced by the characters in the actual film. \n \nAlso available is a discounted joint ticket for this screening and our November 29th screening of ‘American Movie’\, a profoundly funny and beloved cult documentary about a young filmmaker with no less ambition but far less money (approximately $3000) attempting to shoot a horror film in mid 90s Wisconsin\, only to a face a series of hopelessly hilarious setbacks.

SUMMARY:12 Angry Men
DESCRIPTION:A suggestion from one of our TOM’s Film Club audience members. Life is in their hands – Death is on their minds! \nThe defense and the prosecution have rested and the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a young Spanish-American is guilty or innocent of murdering his father. What begins as an open and shut case soon becomes a mini-drama of each of the jurors’ prejudices and preconceptions about the trial\, the accused\, and each other. \n“Thoroughly engaging\, there is nothing dated or corny in Reginald Rose’s intensely knowing screenplay and Lumet’s energetic direction” – Ian Nathan\, EMPIRE \nDoors: 7.15pm \nFilm: 8.00pm

As a relationship develops between them\, Adam is preoccupied with memories of the past and finds himself drawn back to the suburban town where he grew up\, and the childhood home where his parents appear to be living\, just as they were on the day they died\, 30 years before. \n“After an impressive body of work\, Andrew Haigh levels up even further\, with a flawless film that reaches for the stars\, and gets there. It aches and shimmers” – Alex Godfrey\, EMPIRE \nDoors: 7.15pm \nFilm: 8.00pm

SUMMARY:DANCE DOUBLE BILL: Girl Walk// All Day (2011) + Hairspray (2018)
DESCRIPTION:Fabrica and Filmspot present a dance double bill as part of Scalarama 2024 this September. Two cult films to make you want to cut some rug\, as day turns to night! \nFirst screening at 7pm (doors open at 6:30pm): Girl Walk// All Day\, 2011 \nGirl Walk//All Day is directed by Jacob Krupnik\, is a high-energy unconventional dance film\, set to Girl Talk’s 2010 mash up album\, ‘All Day’. The movie follows three dancers as they transform New York City into their stage\, breaking free from everyday routines to explore themes of freedom and self-expression. Bursting with creativity\, it captures the spirit of youth\, adventure\, and the power of music to bring people together. This film is a visual feast\, inspiring viewers to see the world around them as a canvas for their own moves and to embrace life with unbridled enthusiasm and spontaneity. Filmed guerrilla style on the streets of New York\, and originally released in short ‘chapters’ on YouTube\, this is a rare opportunity to see the completed film on the big screen. \n  \nSecond screening at 9pm (doors open at 8:30pm) – Hairspray\, 1988 \nHairspray\, directed by Scalarama darling\, John Waters\, is a fun\, vibrant film set in 1962 Baltimore. It follows Tracy Turnblad\, a plucky teenager with big hair and even bigger dreams\, who lands a spot on a local TV dance show. Tracy becomes an overnight sensation\, challenging the status quo with her unique style and progressive views on racial integration. The movie is a lively mix of dance\, music\, and comedy\, highlighting important themes like self-acceptance and social justice. With its catchy tunes and colourful characters\, ‘Hairspray’ offers an entertaining yet meaningful look at a pivotal time in American history. \nThe screening includes projections by Level 3 Animation & Illustration students at East Sussex College in Lewes.

SUMMARY:Happy as Lazzaro
DESCRIPTION:Winner of Best Screenplay at last year’s Cannes Film Festival\, Italian writer-director Alice Rohrwacher’s Happy as Lazzaro is a beguiling and luminous magic realist fable which echoes the surrealist films of cinematic masters like Pier Paolo Pasolini\, Federico Fellini and Derek Jarman. \nBeautifully shot on super 16mm\, the film follows the sweet natured peasant Lazzaro (played wonderfully by newcomer Adriano Tardiolo) whose people-pleasing personality is often mistaken for simple-mindedness. Lazzaro is persuaded by the village ruler’s bleach blonde-haired son to help him fake his own kidnapping for ransom; however their plans take some unexpected and miraculous turns.

SUMMARY:The Bromley Boys + Q&A with Brenock O’Connor
DESCRIPTION:1970: England is preparing for the defence of the World Cup. \nBromley FC had seen better days: playing and crowd support are embarrassingly poor. David\, nevertheless\, is a big fan; he longs to be in the inner sanctum of his beloved club. \nTeams opposing Bromley lose count of the number of goals conceded. Gambler-Manager McQueen is thought to be considering selling the club’s ‘star’ player to save the enterprise. Chinese whispers abound. Our hero\, David is a big fan of the club’s star and is on McQueen’s trail\, believing the worst. Things\, however\, are never what they seem … \nDoors 7pm\, feature starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:The Passion of Joan of Arc (35mm) + Live Score from Heliopause and This Ship Argo
DESCRIPTION:Marking the 108th anniversary of the Duke of York’s and the 90th anniversary of Carl Theodor Dreyer’s powerful masterwork The Passion of Joan of Arc\, Scalarama and the Duke’s are presenting this seminal silent film from a rare 35mm print with a new and original live score performed by Heliopause and This Ship Argo. \nThis landmark of cinema\, made in 1928\, depicts one of history’s most captivating women\, played by Renée Jeanne Falconetti in her only film role\, but one that has gone down the annals of cinema as one of the most astonishing performances ever committed to film. Receiving visions as a teenage peasant girl\, Joan of Arc managed to convince the King of France to let her lead his armies in order to drive the English from France. After several successful battles\, she was subsequently captured\, held to trial and burnt at the stake\, only aged 19. The French film focuses on the transcripts of her trial in 1431 as the French clerical court tried to discredit her claim that she was sent on the mission by God. \nThe film will be accompanied by a new original live score by musicians Heliopause & This Ship Argo\, using layered vocal loops and electronica to emphasise the film’s unusual cinematography and portrayal of Joan’s emotional state of mind.

SUMMARY:Grease (40th Anniversary!)
DESCRIPTION:Yes\, community cinema is Staying Alive\, and we’re going back to 1959 California with the fantastic and ground-breaking musical drama Grease. Directed by Randal Kleiser this 1978 film starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. It tells the story of Danny and Sandy who fall in love at the beach\, only to find themselves very much at odds\, at the same high school\, with Danny the leader of the notorious T Birds greaser gang and wholesome Sandy hanging out with the well-intentioned Pink Ladies. A rocky road lies ahead as each tries to emulate the other. Fun all the way and made all the more so because local group the Pop Up Singers will be entertaining before the film. Yes\, Grease is the one that we want\, chosen because our demographic loves a bit of nostalgia and\, well\, it’s a great film that deserves to be shown again… and again. Grease\, We’re Hopelessly Devoted to You.

SUMMARY:One Sings\, The Other Doesn't
DESCRIPTION:“I’ve had friends who’ve been very important in my life. In L’Une chante\, l’autre pas I’ve told their story as if it were a novel.” \nAfter a hiatus from making feature films to focus on having a family\, Varda’s return to filmmaking was largely inspired by her involvement in the French Women’s Movement of the 1970s\, which left a profound affect on her. In order to share her story she chose to present the film as a musical\, a genre more associated with the films of her late husband\, Jacques Demy. \nThis feminist decade-spanning musical is a chronicle of the friendship between Suzanne (Thérèse Liotard) and Pauline (Valérie Mairesse)\, who first meet in 1962 when Suzanne\, who is already a mother of two\, decides to get an abortion. The film then jumps ten years ahead\, finding the pair at very different stages in their lives\, both in regards to personal growth and social change. \nDoors from 7pm\, feature starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:The Gleaners and I
DESCRIPTION:During the dawn of the digital age in the late 1990s and early 2000s\, The Gleaners and Iemerged as one of the first true masterpieces to evolve from the new and (at the time) relatively unexplored format. Taken from the old pastime of gleaning (collecting leftover crops from fields after they have been harvested)\, Varda’s documentary focuses on modern-day gleaners\, allowing these marginalised people speak for themselves and address everything from world politics to personal tragedies\, whilst Varda herself questions her own morality in the process. \nPart social critique\, part travelogue\, this eccentric and eye-opening documentary is an unsentimental celebration of human resilience and how we should look out for those who survive on the margins of society and listen to their stories without judgement. \n“Of all the movies I’ve seen in the past several years\, this is one of the ones I love the most”\nMichael Wilmington\, Chicago Tribune

SUMMARY:Cléo from 5 to 7
DESCRIPTION:Shot in Paris during the height of the Sixties\, Varda’s second film Cléo from 5 to 7 tells the story of Cléo\, a pop singer who passes her time drifting through different locations and conversations while awaiting the results of a vital and potentially life-changing medical examination. \nA forerunner to the French New Wave\, Cléo from 5 to 7 was a truly trailblazing exercise in film narrative\, shot in a documentary-like fashion to capture reality as true-to-life as cinematically possible. The film also has a famous ‘silent film-within-a-film’ segment\, which all film connoisseurs will love\, as it contains cameos by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina. \n“As innovative and influential as any New Wave film”\nRoger Ebert\, Chicago Sun-Times

SUMMARY:La Pointe Courte
DESCRIPTION:“I felt I needed to invent my cinema. With La Pointe Courte\, I just jumped in\, in the most radical fashion.” \nAnticipating the style and attitude of the French New Wave by a number of years\, Agnès Varda’s directorial debut remains as fresh and as original as the day it was made. \nLa Pointe Courte follows two different stories\, a government inspector’s visit\, and a couple facing the tribulations of a relationship crisis\, set against the backdrop of the titular Mediterranean fishing town. Silvia Monfort and Philippe Noiret (in his onscreen debut) exceptionally play the married couple drifting through life and their relationship troubles at the forefront of the film. \nRemarkably assured and insightful\, the film bears the realist approach\, social comment and filmmaking flair that would later become hallmarks in Varda’s filmography. \nDoors from 7pm\, feature starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Jeune Femme
DESCRIPTION:France’s answer to Fleabag sees Laetitia Dosch explode onto the screen as Paula in Léonor Serraille’s debut film Jeune Femme\, a live-wire comedy and an excessive exercise in humour and urgency which explores modern life’s everyday misfortunes. \nBack in Paris after a long absence and finding the key to her boyfriend’s apartment no longer works\, Paula goes on an erratic “voyage de la loon” around the city – broken-hearted\, self-destructive\, and with only her ex’s cat’s deadpan stares to rely on. By her nature unable to do anything but live int he moment\, we watch as Paula tries her best to reclaim a measure of stability\, making new allies and seeing the reappearance of figures from her past. \n“Thrillingly capturing both time and place and fizzing with non-judgemental empathy and cinematic flair\, this is a magnificent debut that catapults Laetitia Dosch into the front rank of French actresses”\nDavid Parkinson\, EMPIRE

SUMMARY:You Were Never Really Here
DESCRIPTION:From the director of Ratcatcher and We Need To Talk About Kevin\, You Were Never Really Here is the brutal and defiantly masterful new film by uncompromising British filmmaker Lynne Ramsay\, and stars an ever-excellent Joaquin Phenoix as a damaged Gulf War veteran and former FBI agent turned assassin for hire\, tasked with rescuing a U.S. senator’s daughter from an upscale brothel\, as well as taking out the perpetrators responsible for her kidnapping. \nRecalling many of the harrowing themes found in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver\, and aided by Thomas Townend’s remarkable cinematography and Jonny Greenwood’s immersive electronic score\, this inventive thriller is a devastating portrayal of a man wrestling with years of repression and abuse while engaged in a cycle of violence he cannot control. \n“…an overwhelming experience\, a slice of pure cinema from a director who refuses to dance to the beat of anyone’s drum but her own. From the disorienting opening to the enigmatic finale\, Lynne Ramsay is always really here\, her commanding vision shining through every frame”\nMark Kermode\, The Guardian
