SUMMARY:Portrait of Jason
DESCRIPTION:On the night of December 2\, 1966\, Shirley Clarke and a tiny crew convened in her apartment at the Hotel Chelsea to make a film. There\, for twelve straight hours they filmed the inimitable Jason Holliday as he spun tales\, sang\, donned costumes and reminisced about his experiences as a gay hustler\, sometime houseboy and aspiring cabaret performer. The result is a mesmerizing portrait of a remarkable\, charming and tortured man\, who is by turns hilarious and heartbreaking. Part cinema verité and part fiction it remains one of the most remarkable films of American independent filmmaking. \nPart of Agnes & Shirley\, a She’s A Rebel mini-season looking the work of Agnes Varda and her self-described ‘double’ Shirley Clarke. \nShirley Clarke | 1967 | US | 105 mins

SUMMARY:Happy as Lazzaro
DESCRIPTION:Winner of Best Screenplay at last year’s Cannes Film Festival\, Italian writer-director Alice Rohrwacher’s Happy as Lazzaro is a beguiling and luminous magic realist fable which echoes the surrealist films of cinematic masters like Pier Paolo Pasolini\, Federico Fellini and Derek Jarman. \nBeautifully shot on super 16mm\, the film follows the sweet natured peasant Lazzaro (played wonderfully by newcomer Adriano Tardiolo) whose people-pleasing personality is often mistaken for simple-mindedness. Lazzaro is persuaded by the village ruler’s bleach blonde-haired son to help him fake his own kidnapping for ransom; however their plans take some unexpected and miraculous turns.

SUMMARY:Films We Love: Things to Come
DESCRIPTION:In Things to Come Isabelle Huppert plays Nathalie\, a philosophy professor navigating life in middle-age with a graceful defiance. Throughout Hansen-Løve’s absorbing film she faces a series of trying experiences including an unwell mother (screen legend Edith Scob)\, political protests\, marital infidelity and career compromises. Nathalie’s is a compelling and authentically told story\, as we see her teaching her students to question the notion of truth and undertake a journey that will ultimately see her grapple with the question of how to live well. \n“Probably the finest French actress in films today is Isabelle Huppert\, and in Things to Come we’re drawn deeply in to the daily concerns of one middle-class French family. It’s witty\, oddly uplifting and Huppert is superb.” – Screen Machine team. \nWe know that some of our audiences want to see a broader range of films\, so\, alongside our usual programme\, between August – October this year we’re bringing six different films to six different locations. Each film has been chosen specially by one of six members from the Screen Machine team. This is an outstanding selection of international titles spanning decades\, a variety of genres and innovative filmmaking styles. We’ve delved deep into our fondest memories of cinema-going to choose films that inspire\, challenge and entertain. These are films we love – we hope you’ll love them too. \nAll films with English subtitles. Screen Machine has wheelchair access. If you are a wheelchair user\, we ask you to please call our office in advance in order that we can prepare in advance of your visit – (0131) 550 3734. We can book your ticket and arrange entry for any carer who may accompany you. For hearing aid users\, we have a personal inductive neckloop facility\, If you would find this facility useful\, please ask the operator or usher when you arrive. \nIf there are titles here that you want to see but won’t get the chance\, let us know! SUMMARY:Films We Love: Cleo from 5 to 7
DESCRIPTION:Cleo\, a singer living in Paris\, awaits the test results of a biopsy – she meets friends\, makes friends\, wanders the city and attempts to deal with the limbo-like state of waiting. Writer/Director Agnès Varda vividly captures the atmosphere of Paris in the 1960s\, unfolding the narrative in real time to create a nimble\, spirited and utterly modern portrait of Cleo’s life in a day. \n“Varda\, once unjustly overlooked\, is now at age 90 considered a legend of cinema\, having received an Honorary Oscar in 2017. Her second film\, Cleo from 5 to 7\, looks stunning\, it’s funny\, stylish and thoughtful\, and pretty much a total joy.” – Screen Machine team. \nWe know that some of our audiences want to see a broader range of films\, so\, alongside our usual programme\, between August – October this year we’re bringing six different films to six different locations. SUMMARY:Black Panthers (1968) + Black Power Mixtape 1967 - 1975
DESCRIPTION:Scalarama Liverpool marks 50 years since 1968 to see what impact that revolutionary year had on the world and what can we learn from the past to deal with the current state of affairs. We’ll be launching the BLACK POWER strand of this programme with an event at the Black-E looking at the legacy of the Black Power movement in the US as seen by two European filmmakers. \nBLACK PANTHERS (1968) \nAgnès Varda\, 1968\, France\, 30mins \nWhilst she was living in the US\, famed filmmaker Agnès Varda turns her camera on an Oakland demonstration against the imprisonment of activist and Black Panthers cofounder Huey P. Newton. In addition to evincing Varda’s fascination with her adopted surroundings and her empathy\, this perceptive short is also a powerful political statement. \n+ \nBLACK POWER MIXTAPE 1967 – 1975 \nGöran Olsson\, 2011\, Sweden/US\, 100mins\, partly in Swedish with English subtitles \nFrom 1967 to 1975\, fueled by curiosity and naïveté\, Swedish journalists traversed the ocean to film the black power movement in America. The Black Power Mixtape 1967–1975 mobilizes a mosaic of images\, music\, and narration to chronicle the movement’s evolution. \nDoors: 6pm. Films: 6.30pm. \nTickets: Pay-what-you-can donation (recommended donation £5 / £4 concessions) BUY HERE >>  \nScreening supported by Uprising!: The Spirit of ‘68\, a major programme organised by the BFI Film Audience Network\, delivering funds from the National Lottery.

SUMMARY:One Sings\, The Other Doesn't
DESCRIPTION:“I’ve had friends who’ve been very important in my life. In L’Une chante\, l’autre pas I’ve told their story as if it were a novel.” \nAfter a hiatus from making feature films to focus on having a family\, Varda’s return to filmmaking was largely inspired by her involvement in the French Women’s Movement of the 1970s\, which left a profound affect on her. In order to share her story she chose to present the film as a musical\, a genre more associated with the films of her late husband\, Jacques Demy. \nThis feminist decade-spanning musical is a chronicle of the friendship between Suzanne (Thérèse Liotard) and Pauline (Valérie Mairesse)\, who first meet in 1962 when Suzanne\, who is already a mother of two\, decides to get an abortion. The film then jumps ten years ahead\, finding the pair at very different stages in their lives\, both in regards to personal growth and social change. \nDoors from 7pm\, feature starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:The Gleaners and I
DESCRIPTION:During the dawn of the digital age in the late 1990s and early 2000s\, The Gleaners and Iemerged as one of the first true masterpieces to evolve from the new and (at the time) relatively unexplored format. Taken from the old pastime of gleaning (collecting leftover crops from fields after they have been harvested)\, Varda’s documentary focuses on modern-day gleaners\, allowing these marginalised people speak for themselves and address everything from world politics to personal tragedies\, whilst Varda herself questions her own morality in the process. \nPart social critique\, part travelogue\, this eccentric and eye-opening documentary is an unsentimental celebration of human resilience and how we should look out for those who survive on the margins of society and listen to their stories without judgement. \n“Of all the movies I’ve seen in the past several years\, this is one of the ones I love the most”\nMichael Wilmington\, Chicago Tribune

SUMMARY:Cléo from 5 to 7
DESCRIPTION:Shot in Paris during the height of the Sixties\, Varda’s second film Cléo from 5 to 7 tells the story of Cléo\, a pop singer who passes her time drifting through different locations and conversations while awaiting the results of a vital and potentially life-changing medical examination. \nA forerunner to the French New Wave\, Cléo from 5 to 7 was a truly trailblazing exercise in film narrative\, shot in a documentary-like fashion to capture reality as true-to-life as cinematically possible. The film also has a famous ‘silent film-within-a-film’ segment\, which all film connoisseurs will love\, as it contains cameos by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard and Anna Karina. \n“As innovative and influential as any New Wave film”\nRoger Ebert\, Chicago Sun-Times

SUMMARY:La Pointe Courte
DESCRIPTION:“I felt I needed to invent my cinema. With La Pointe Courte\, I just jumped in\, in the most radical fashion.” \nAnticipating the style and attitude of the French New Wave by a number of years\, Agnès Varda’s directorial debut remains as fresh and as original as the day it was made. \nLa Pointe Courte follows two different stories\, a government inspector’s visit\, and a couple facing the tribulations of a relationship crisis\, set against the backdrop of the titular Mediterranean fishing town. Silvia Monfort and Philippe Noiret (in his onscreen debut) exceptionally play the married couple drifting through life and their relationship troubles at the forefront of the film. \nRemarkably assured and insightful\, the film bears the realist approach\, social comment and filmmaking flair that would later become hallmarks in Varda’s filmography. \nDoors from 7pm\, feature starts at 7:30pm

SUMMARY:Jeune Femme
DESCRIPTION:France’s answer to Fleabag sees Laetitia Dosch explode onto the screen as Paula in Léonor Serraille’s debut film Jeune Femme\, a live-wire comedy and an excessive exercise in humour and urgency which explores modern life’s everyday misfortunes. \nBack in Paris after a long absence and finding the key to her boyfriend’s apartment no longer works\, Paula goes on an erratic “voyage de la loon” around the city – broken-hearted\, self-destructive\, and with only her ex’s cat’s deadpan stares to rely on. By her nature unable to do anything but live int he moment\, we watch as Paula tries her best to reclaim a measure of stability\, making new allies and seeing the reappearance of figures from her past. \n“Thrillingly capturing both time and place and fizzing with non-judgemental empathy and cinematic flair\, this is a magnificent debut that catapults Laetitia Dosch into the front rank of French actresses”\nDavid Parkinson\, EMPIRE

SUMMARY:You Were Never Really Here
DESCRIPTION:From the director of Ratcatcher and We Need To Talk About Kevin\, You Were Never Really Here is the brutal and defiantly masterful new film by uncompromising British filmmaker Lynne Ramsay\, and stars an ever-excellent Joaquin Phenoix as a damaged Gulf War veteran and former FBI agent turned assassin for hire\, tasked with rescuing a U.S. senator’s daughter from an upscale brothel\, as well as taking out the perpetrators responsible for her kidnapping. \nRecalling many of the harrowing themes found in Scorsese’s Taxi Driver\, and aided by Thomas Townend’s remarkable cinematography and Jonny Greenwood’s immersive electronic score\, this inventive thriller is a devastating portrayal of a man wrestling with years of repression and abuse while engaged in a cycle of violence he cannot control. \n“…an overwhelming experience\, a slice of pure cinema from a director who refuses to dance to the beat of anyone’s drum but her own. From the disorienting opening to the enigmatic finale\, Lynne Ramsay is always really here\, her commanding vision shining through every frame”\nMark Kermode\, The Guardian
