3.00pm

MILOU IN MAY (15)

Louis Malle / 1990 / France / 108mins / In French with English subtitles

While France is threatening to erupt into revolution during May 1968, a bourgeois family assembles at a large country house for the funeral of the matriarch and the division of her goods. With the latest news from Paris as their soundtrack, the family members argue over property and revive long-simmering arguments. Even with the reports of the riots coming in, the family prefers to focus on petty foibles, indiscretions and personal gain rather than the current political climate. Everyone is on strike and the matriarch can’t be buried.

Milou in May has something for everyone: farcical comedy, beautiful cinematography, perceptive commentary and savage political satire. Rarely has a corpse lying in state been surrounded by so much activity: private longings, public declarations, old resentments and new romances are all given priority over preparations for the funeral.

Part of Scalarama Liverpool: Uprising – looking at the legacy of 1968.

Tickets: £5 (free for over 16s with National Lottery ticket, see above for details)

5.30pm

STRONG COFFEE ISN’T THAT BAD (cert TBC)

Aleksander Pietrzak / 2014 / Poland / 49 mins. In Polish with English subtitles.

A charming short film about the relationship between  father and  son. In this comedy-drama, the son comes back home after 18years abroad. It is a story about two men too stubborn to admit their true feelings.

Tickets: £5 (free for over 16s with National Lottery ticket, see above for details)

7.00pm

BLACK PANTHER (12A)

Ryan Coogler / 2018 / USA / 2 hr 15 mins

The final film of Scalarama Liverpool 2018 is both a box office sensation and a milestone for black representation on screen. Marvel’s Black Panther sees the newly crowned King T’Challa of the African state of Wakanda, hidden from the rest of the world via its state-of-the art technology, facing a battle for the throne when a figure from his father’s past emerges from the shadows. With themes touching on the legacy of black power, colonisation, Afrofuturism and feminism, this is one blockbuster that is genuinely groundbreaking.

Part of Scalarama Liverpool: Uprising – looking at the legacy of 1968 and black power.

Tickets: £7.50 (free for over 16s with National Lottery ticket, see above for details)
