As part of Scalarama film festival, Girl Gang Leeds presents a screening of Crystal Moselle’s ‘Skate Kitchen’ (2018) followed by an (optional!) skateboarding workshop.
The event aims to spotlight the representation of women and people of marginalised genders in skateboarding – so whether you’re a skating pro or simply have a passing interest, this event is for you!
Inspired by the real life, all-girl skate collective in Brooklyn NY, ‘Skate Kitchen’ tells the story of Camille, a teenaged skateboarder who becomes friends with a group of fellow women skaters, cruising the streets of Brooklyn while attempting to navigate life.
Girl Gang Leeds will be joined by:
– Rollin’ With The Girls (RWTG) – a Leeds-based collective of female skateboarders
– Leeds Girls Can – the regional branch of a nationwide campaign advocating the presence and visibility of women in sports
– Artist Erin Brier whose photographic work has foregrounded women skateboarders.
Please note that to ensure a safe space for workshop practice, this event is exclusive to women and people of marginalised genders.
