DIRT IN THE GATE MOVIES are back with a TWO DAY 35mm extravaganza of classic genre movies!

Welcome to GRINDFEST!

Our search of film archives the world over continues to bring rare 35mm prints out of storage and are excited to screen them on the big screen in their original native release format, some of which haven’t been seen theatrically in the UK for YEARS!

Expect some surprises/give aways/short films/vintage trailers during the mind melting weekend of celluloid treats!

An exclusive 2 DAY GRINDFEST PASS will give you access to ALL of the following 35mm screenings (You must be 18 years or over to purchase and use a 2 day pass)

19:00 Friday 21st September 2018
ERASERHEAD (1977) | 89m | B&W | 1.75:1 | Dir. David Lynch

Be warned: The nightmare has not gone away. A film that defies conventional logic and storytelling, fueled by its dark nightmarish atmosphere and compellingly disturbing visuals. Henry Spencer is a hapless factory worker on his vacation when he finds out he’s the father of a hideously deformed baby. Now living with his unhappy, malcontent girlfriend, the child cries day and night, driving Henry and his girlfriend to near insanity. Experience David Lynch’s debut feature for the first time all over again in a very rare UK 35mm screening.

21:15 Friday 21st September 2018
POPCORN (1991) | 91m | 1.85:1 | Dir. Mark Herrier, Alan Ormsby

What could be scarier than an all-night “Horrorthon”? A group of film students finds out when they stage just such an event at an abandoned movie palace. In addition to the three features—MOSQUITO, THE ATTACK OF THE AMAZING ELECTRIFIED MAN and THE STENCH—they decide to screen a bizarre short called THE POSSESSOR, whose creator, Lanyard Gates, killed his family and set the theater on fire after its first showing. Maggie (Jill Schoelen, THE STEPFATHER) has been having frightening dreams that seem to be connected to THE POSSESSOR, and as the festival proceeds, the nightmare comes true for her and her friends as they are stalked and slain by a mysterious killer. Has Gates survived to continue THE POSSESSOR’s deadly legacy?

A loving homage to ’50s/’60s B-movies (the trio of flicks shown at the Horrorthon all have accompanying William Castle-style gimmicks), POPCORN is also an insanely fun horror/comedy in its own right. Pseudonymously written by Alan Ormsby (CAT PEOPLE, DEATHDREAM), who directed the films-within-the-film, it celebrates the joys of old-fashioned creature features and ’80s-style stalk-and-slay, with a great cast additionally including Dee Wallace Stone (THE HOWLING), Tony Roberts (AMITYVILLE 3-D), Ray Walston (THE STAND), Malcolm Danare (CHRISTINE) and Kelly Jo Minter (A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 5).

11:45 Saturday 22nd September 2018
THE MONSTER SQUAD (1987) | 79m | 2.35:1 Panavision | Dir. Fred Dekker

You know who to call when you have ghosts but who do you call when you have monsters? The Monster Squad are a tree house club of five kids who are self-proclaimed horror fanatics. Little did they know that their enthusiasm in the genre would suddenly come in handy as their town is invaded by Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolfman, The Mummy and a Sea Creature. Dracula is terrorizing the town, trying to locate a powerful amulet which has the potential for serious disaster. When no one else believes the kids, or when no one else is powerful enough to stop them using traditional crime fighting methods, the Monster Squad takes things upon themselves to save the day.

13.45 Saturday 22nd September 2018
DEMONS (1985) | 88m | 1.85:1 | Dir. Lamberto Bava

‘They will make cemeteries their cathedrals and the cities will be your tombs’.
Several people are invited to join the re-opening of Metropol, a palatial movie theatre. As the horror film shown to the guests gets more and more violent, the people start to transform one by one into bloodthirsty demons. The remaining guests begin the desperate battle for their lives.

16.00 Saturday 22nd September 2018
FROM BEYOND (1986) | 85m | 1.85:1 | Dir. Stuart Gordon

Humans are such easy prey. From the makers of RE-ANIMATOR!
Unable to tame the unharnessed power of the mysterious device which stimulates the pineal gland, the Resonator, Dr Edward Pretorious ends up dead and his trustworthy assistant, Dr Crawford Tillinghast, confined to an insane asylum accused of his murder. But soon, under the supervision of the demure Dr Katherine McMichaels, the Resonator will hum once again in a desperate attempt to regenerate Dr Pretorious’ fruitless experiment and finally unlock the doorway to the otherworldly reality of the fourth dimension. However, the myriads of the unseen and monstrous entities that reside in a nightmarish realm, can’t wait to return into ours.

18.45 Saturday 22nd September 2018
THE GHASTLY LOVE OF JOHNNY X (2012) | 106m | 2.35:1 Ghastlyscope | Dir. Paul Bunnell

UK’s first 35mm Screening!
A truly mad concoction, blending 1950s juvenile delinquents, sci-fi melodrama, song-and-dance, and a touch of horror, everything in just the right combination to create a mesmerising big screen spectacle! This curious and curiously entertaining story involves one Jonathan Xavier and his devoted misfit gang who, incidentally, have been exiled to Earth from the far reaches of outer space. Johnny’s former girlfriend Bliss has left him and stolen his Resurrection Suit, a cosmic, mind-bending uniform that gives the owner power over others. Along the way, there will be several highly stylized musical numbers, lots of genuinely humorous dialogue, and a wacky plot-twist or two, all beautifully captured on the very last of Kodak’s black-and-white Plus-X film stock.

21:00 Saturday 22nd September 2018
BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA (1986) | 99m | 2.35:1 Panavision | Dir. John Carpenter

Jack Burton’s in for some serious trouble and you’re in for some serious fun!
When trucker Jack Burton agreed to take his friend Wang Chi to pick up his fiancee at the airport, he never expected to get involved in a supernatural battle between good and evil. Wang’s fiancee has emerald green eyes, which make her a perfect target for an immortal sorcerer named Lo Pan and his three invincible cronies. Lo Pan must marry a girl with green eyes so he can regain his physical form. Now, Jack must save Wang’s fiancee from Lo Pan and his henchmen, and win back his stolen truck. But how can he defeat an enemy who has no body?
